Consciousness allows for illusions. Illusions don't allow for consciousness.
Could consciousness be an illusion?

I'm afraid pausing AGI development is not unlike banning prostitution: the prostitutes keep working, the johns keep paying, and the pimps just move the whole thing into darker rooms with worse oversight.

You know who can't appreciate the meaning you ascribe to death? The dead.

Kurzweil was directionally right for a simple reason (human-level AI around 2029): he bet on computation and scale (bitter lesson, basically). Most people laughed at him and most ML experts said it'd be 50-100 years later, or even later, or never(!).

If you have a system that can function but it's missing opposable thumbs, than all tools requiring grip and use of the opposable thumb are not "overhang" for that system. But for general intelligence, absolutely everything is overhang or quickly becomes overhang across all layers of organization. So for a limited system, overhang exists only inside its current action space. For general intelligence, the action space itself is editable. If a capability is missing, the system can build, borrow, automate, delegate, or redesign around it. Opposable thumb needed? Opposable thumb built.

AI being a bubble is only as much of point as the internet being a bubble. And the bubble part matters far, far, far less for AI than it did for internet, because it is way more transformative.

We are now seeking a puzzle maker to help us create puzzles that LLMs can't yet solve.

One of my friend's (Lee Petty from DoubleFine) environment concepts from Keeper was a winning selection in the 2026 Game Maker's Sketchbook. I'm not surprised, Keeper has sublime art. It's in my top ever art games along with Shadow of the Colossus.

This is a neat game, I've been enjoying it. @exQUIZitely
The day has come! My little homage to the classic arcade marble games, Marble's Marbles, is out in the wild for people to play! I hope people get lots of joy playing it so I can keep adding levels for a long time!

"a survey of views about infant consciousness": by @cpassosf and me, just published in @NeuroConsc. we surveyed participants (phil, neuro, psych, etc) at ASSC 28 and the NYU conference on infant consciousness. notable results: 1. a majority (75%) favor the view that newborn infants are conscious. 2. a plurality (44%) favor late pre-natal (after 24 weeks gestation) emergence of consciousness 3. a plurality (49%) favor late post-natal emergence (after six months old) of self-consciousness. 4. majorities (87%) favor newborns having sensory and affective consciousness, but not (~30%) cognitive or agentive consciousness. plus questions on 5. the neural basis of infant consciousness, 6. methods, 7. animals and AI systems, 8. theories of consciousness. academic.oup.com/nc/article/…

experiment with a memory system that keeps rewriting itself: a hopfield network remembers an alphabet. as memories decay, it begins to hallucinate glyphs it was never taught - forgetting becomes a way of inventing.
