I am honestly tired of this discourse
Population is not always proportional to success. Success of China and USA have far more fundamental reasons for sporting success than just numbers.
Also the narrative of India being a failed sporting nation is also very shallow
No FIFA World Cup is complete without “if X, a country of y people, can play, why can’t India, a country of 1.5 billion?” posts from Indian fans.
(y is a very small number, X is usually not a football powerhouse, often a debutant)

Hockey, also perhaps in a transitional phase has had poor results in the last year, but over the last decade we have been among the top 5 nations in the world (comparing always to 1920s- 1960s dominance is unfair)
Boxing we have world champions
