Have you ever heard of bear bile harvesting? It’s a thing in parts of Asia. Bears are kept in cages so bile can be taken from their bodies and sold for traditional medicine. In Laos, a country in Southeast Asia, Free the Bears has just helped rescue 27 moon bears from an illegal bile farm that rescuers say was hiding behind the cover of a “zoo.” Free the Bears is an international rescue group that works to get bears out of bile farms and into sanctuary care. These 27 bears are now at its Luang Prabang Wildlife Sanctuary in Laos, going through vet checks, quarantine and recovery. The facility they came from was already expanding, with room planned for as many as 200 bears. Twenty-seven got out before it became that.
