🚨Please stop calling this brain drain. When there are high overseas returns to education, *more people get educated*. Think about all the folk working their asses off for this exam, and then *staying in India*. High returns for migrants are good, they build human capital. 1/N
Out of the 1,000 top scorers on the entrance exam for the Indian Institutes of Technology, 36% have migrated eight years later (primarily to the US). Out of the top 100, 62%. Out of the top 10, 90%. nber.org/papers/w31308

So in one week I have a paper accepted at the Econometrics Journal and @causalinf drops my interview on his podcast. BRB -- going to buy a lottery ticket. 🏃‍♂️ (I'll forgive Scott the hyperbole of "legend." I'm just some guy with a deviated septum who caught a lot of breaks.)
Season 2 of my podcast, The Mixtape with Scott, is out and it's with the legend @jmwooldridge . I'm listening to it now, and it's a lot of fun listening to Jeff tell the story of his life and career. I hope you like the new music intro too. causalinf.substack.com/p/sea…

I ask students to prepare for text-based discussions by coming to class with 1) a new understanding, 2) a quote from the text that resonated or needs unpacking, and 3) a question that will help us wrestle with the meaning of the text and/or the implications of the text. It works.
Cautionary tale about "nobody did the reading." I once sat in on a grad stats class taught by a very senior prof. I knew from students before class they'd done the reading but found it challenging, had lots of doubts and questions. Very unsure where to start. 1/2

If you teach students to work with data, you're doing them a great disservice if you just teach them how to run models/analyses and not how to clean and manipulate data. If you haven't tested them directly on this, you'll be surprised how unintuitive this is to new users!
