ALT TOI Meerut police seek 'friends' on social media to reach out to people Aug 14, 2015 Meerut police is launching a hyper-local initiative—called the first of its kind in India—roping in city-based social media influencers as "friends of police on social media." Instead of cops, locally popular bloggers, college students, FB group admins, and minor celebrities will tweet or post about issues like helmet and seatbelt safety, reaching audiences more effectively. DIG Ramit Sharma says the focus is on local influence—people followed by Meerut's social media users, including admins of popular Facebook pages and Twitter users with large followings. FB page admins welcomed the move. The scheme will leverage Meerut's Social Media Command and Research Centre, set up last month after a February proposal. Besides monitoring content for law-and-order risks, the centre helps gauge public sentiment—e.g., searching "Meerut police" reveals how citizens perceive the force, offering useful feedback.

ALT TECH-SAVVY OFFICERS RAMIT SHARMA, DIG (2014-15) Technology in policing was introduced in the region by Ramit Sharma, who served as the DIG of Meerut Range (which includes Noida) from 2014-15. The officer introduced a Social Media Monitoring Centre in the region, and also a scheme wherein users who were popular on FB or Twitter were used as a medium by the department to reach out to the public. The focus on technology isn’t surprising, considering Sharma is an alumnus of IIT-Kanpur and has done courses in Digital and Social Media Strategies, and using social media for Intelligence Collection.
ALT Metropolitan Police to target online hate crime and abuse 14 August 2016 A new team of specialist police officers is being set up to investigate online hate crimes, including abuse on Twitter and Facebook. The London-based hub will include a team of five officers who will support victims & identify online abuse. The two-year pilot will cost £1.7m. The team, which will be set up in the coming months, will identify the location of crimes and allocate them to the appropriate force. They will work with a team of volunteers. The Mayor's Office for Policing and Crime (Mopac) said social media "provides hate crime perpetrators with a veil of anonymity, making it harder to bring them to justice and potentially impacting on a larger number of people". The general police response to online hate crime was "inconsistent". A Mopac spokesperson said it was the first time a "dedicated police team" had been set up to detect and respond to hate crimes.

Mopac also found the police response to online hate crime was inconsistent, primarily because police officers were not equipped to tackle it. The team, including one detective inspector, one detective sergeant & three detective constables, will identify the location of crimes & allocate them to the appropriate force. They will also aim to develop links with volunteers who will report both criminal and non-criminal online hate incidents.
ALT New cyber unit at Scotland Yard to tackle online hate crimes London Aug 14 2016 Scotland Yard today said it had set up a new multi-million-pound cyber unit to monitor online hate crimes. A team of volunteers will search out material they deem inappropriate on social networks and report it to the new Metropolitan Police unit. The allegations will then be investigated and culprits prosecuted. The unit will cost the Met Police1.7 million pounds to create and will be staffed by five detectives. London mayor Sadiq Khan's Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC) said a consultation on crime reduction had identified the increasing role online hate played in targeting individuals and communities. The consultation found social media provided hate-crime perpetrators with a veil of anonymity, making it harder to bring them to justice and potentially affecting a larger number of people.
ALT Mayor launches new unit to tackle online hate crime 24 April 2017 Mayor of London today launched a new police unit – the first of its kind in the UK - to help tackle online hate crime. Five dedicated Met police officers, led by a Detective Inspector, make up the new Online Hate Crime Hub, which aims to improve police response to online hate by gathering intelligence, improving understanding & testing new investigation methods. Working with community groups, social media organisations, academic hate crime specialists & criminal justice partners, these specially recruited and trained officers will help to identify, prevent and investigate these crimes, including abuse on Twitter and Facebook. Based in West London’s Empress State Building, the Hub is a key part of the Mayor’s new Police and Crime Plan. Led by MOPAC, Met and key partners, the Hub has been developed out of concerns from community organisations around the increasing use of social media & the internet to spread hatred.

ALT Sadiq Khan launches London online hate crime hub 24 April 2017 A police unit to help tackle online hate crime & provide better support for victims in London has been launched by the capital's mayor. Online Hate Crime Hub is made up of five specially trained Met police officers who will try to identify, prevent & investigate online abuse. Sadiq Khan said officers would "work with community experts to develop the police's understanding of online hate". It is the first hub of its kind in the UK & will cost £1.7m over two years. It is being funded by the Met & the Mayor's Office for Policing & Crime (MOPAC), with £452,000 also being contributed by the Home Office Police Innovation Fund. Any online hate crimes reported to police in the capital, including abuse posted on Twitter and Facebook, will be looked into by the unit. Officers will provide referrals to victim support groups & work with police in relevant boroughs to investigate.

ALT मेरठ में बन रही प्रदेश की पहली सोशल मीडिया मॉनिटरिंग लैब हिन्दुस्तान एक्सक्लूसिव मेरठ, निशांत कौशिक सोशल मीडिया के सहारे समाज में माहौल बिगाड़ने की कोशिश करने वालों पर अंकुश लगाने के लिए प्रदेश की पहली सोशल मीडिया मॉनिटरिंग लैब मेरठ में बनने जा रही है। इसका निर्माण उत्तर प्रदेश पुलिस द्वारा दिल्ली आईआईटी के सहयोग से किया जा रहा है। इसे आईआईटी के विशेषज्ञों द्वारा संचालित कर पुलिस कर्मियों को ट्रेनिंग दी जाएगी। डीआईजी रमित शर्मा ने बताया कि लैब को तैयार करने में दिल्ली आईआईटी के विशेषज्ञ जुटे हैं और 20-25 दिनों में इसे तैयार कर दिया जाएगा। एक माह में ये लाभ काम करना शुरू कर देगी। इसके माध्यम से पश्चिमी उत्तर प्रदेश में फ़ेसबुक, व्हाट्सएप और ट्विटर आदि पर दिए जाने वाले संदेशों और फ़ोटो आदि की मॉनिटरिंग की जाएगी।

The lab will monitor social media activities in six cities which come under jurisdiction of the DIG, Meerut range. Asked about budget involved in the initiative, Sharma said, "No specific budget has been assigned for the project..."

ALT पूर्व डीआईजी और पूर्व एसपी सीटी को प्रशस्ति चिन्ह मेरठ : मेरठ के पूर्व डीआईजी रमित शर्मा और पूर्व एसपी सीटी रहे राकेश जौली को पुलिस विभाग में उत्कृष्ट व असाधारण कार्य के लिए पुलिस महानिदेशक का प्रशस्ति चिन्ह देने की घोषणा की गई है। मेरठ में बतौर डीआईजी रहे रमित शर्मा ने सोशल साइट्स पर नजर रखने और अफवाहों पर लगाम लगाने के लिए सोशल मीडिया लैब यानी सोशल मीडिया कमांड एंड रिसर्च सेंटर बनाने की योजना को अमली जामा पहनाया था। मेरठ में बनी यह सोशल मीडिया लैब प्रदेश की पहली लैब है। इसके अलावा रोबोट से ट्रैफिक कंट्रोल समेत कई अन्य प्रस्ताव मेरठ के पूर्व डीआईजी रमित शर्मा ने मुख्यालय को भेजे थे। इनमे से कई पर काम चल रहा है। वर्तमान में डीआईजी रमित शर्मा लखनऊ में तैनात हैं। वहीं दूसरी ओर राकेश जौली वर्तमान में एसपी क्राइम मुजफ्फरनगर हैं। बवाल के समय राकेश जौली मुजफ्फरनगर में एसपी क्राइम ही थे और स्थिति बेकाबू होने के समय उन्हें बुलाया गया था। इन्ही कार्यों के चलते दोनों अधिकारियों को पुलिस महानिदेशक का प्रशस्ति चिन्ह दिया गया है।

ALT Meerut gets 2nd social media lab in country after Mumbai TNN | Aug 21, 2015 Meerut got its second social media monitoring lab in the country on Friday. It is set to track matters relating to public order. The lab has been running on a trial basis in & was officially launched by the DIG Meerut range on Friday at a function in Lucknow. DIG Meerut Ramit Sharma, the brain behind the initiative, told TOI, "…This is basically a preventive measure so as to minimize any fear-mongering or communal incidents due to circulation of any video or audio clip on social media." The social media lab, based at the DIG office in Meerut, will be monitoring accounts in six cities of Meerut range. It is the first such lab in Uttar Pradesh. Social media lab will analyze Meerut-specific keywords and trends on popular networking sites like Facebook and Twitter. The system is basically designed to check fear-mongering, online bullying & prevent online rumour mills in all the six districts of the Meerut range.

And with UP being especially sensitive to such elements, state police department is going to equip itself to handle such propaganda & terror related activities in 2016. So, the state’s first social media lab was set up in Meerut. It uses Advanced Applications for Social Media Analytics which not just keep track of conversations among groups & individuals over an issue, but also enables police to identify troublemakers & tip off concerned police station before the issue gathered steam & posed a threat to law & order. It helped police diffuse communal tensions in sensitive districts. The state's first social media lab came up in Meerut. The project was the brainchild of the then DIG Ramit Sharma.
