Yes and no. Normie Indians have no idea how far behind the rest of the developing world India used to be on several developmental metrics.
Places like Iran, Mexico, and Palestine were 20 years ahead of India on several healthcare metrics like youth literacy, infant mortality and maternal mortality.
India just caught up with these countries in the last few years. It’s impressive in the sense that the Indian political system was unable to do this for 60 years.

Cricket as a sport has traits that makes it inferior to football or basketball or even American football.
- There is no timer, thus no urgency
- Play stops every ball
- It's a collection of individuals playing team sport - batters, bowlers, fielders
- Cricket started as a sport for the elite to watch while eating muffins & sipping on chamomile tea.
It's tough doing commentary on cricket & there are far too many condescending pricks in the audience who start pissing on commentators if they haven't played the game.
John Motson, Martin Tyler, Peter Drury, Connon McNamara - these are the greatest commentators in English football history but none of them are players.
Harsha Bhogle is an exception in India because he's been broadcasting before broadcast was a thing in India.
Cricket is a weird game & it has a sense of classism & elitism about it, which reflects in the commentary.

i grew up reading Jaspal Rana's achievements in sportstar. IIRC, 94 was his golden year, he did well in both Asian & Commonwealth games. Sad to hear about his passing away so early. Condolences to his family.
