This is bleak but a really important point to consider, especially as more content creators enter the attention economy. When the metric being optimized is total attention captured, a lot of criteria that we’d typically consider important for good media goes out the window.

I wonder how different the union conversation would be if we all learned in school that unions are the only reason we have weekends, the only reason we don't work 12 hours a day, the only reason kids aren't forced to work, and that union members fought and died for those wins

My usage of social media apps is inversely correlated to how much sleep I got the night before.
When I am sleep deprived, I feel such an urge to mindlessly scroll through short form content because everything else feels too hard.

Audience empathy is essential to good writing & good design; they're both communication where user/reader understanding reigns. Some advice applies nicely to both disciplines, like the writer's adage to "kill your darlings".

what i like about verbal communication is that thing where you have to circle around the point you’re trying to make til you find the right words
“not quite this, not quite that” etc
false starts speak volumes, but written communication tends to obscure the whole search process
