As Reading Central Library is closed in preparation for its move to Bridge Street, we look back at its history. This is the official opening ceremony of the first library, held in the Town Hall, with the organ in the background, Wednesday 9th February, 1883. #ReadingLocalHistory

There will be no 9.45am rhymetime session at Southcote library on Thursday 28th May. Customers can instead drop-in to a 10.30am session at Palmer Park library, or an 11am session at Whitley library. We apologise for any inconvenience.

Park Hospital opened on 30th May 1906 on land that had belonged to the Mansion House estate (Prospect Park), this is the residence of the matron and staff, plus the kitchen annexe, Although a lot of the site has been redeveloped, this building still exists. #ReadingLocalHistory

Hewens Garage was on Castle Street in Reading from at least the 1930s to the 1960s, and here we have a Morris Minor car on display in their showroom, complete with wicker chairs and flower arrangements dating to May 1935. #ReadingLocalHistory
