The genetic repertoire of early eukaryotes was shaped by horizontal gene-transfer from broader microbial interactions, including viruses! Fascinating stuff @moigilbernabeu@Marcet45@MicroBioBits@toni_gabaldon
@VernCarruthers and I had a great time writing this review pondering the versatility of key adaptations common to #apicomplexans, #dinoflagellates and other myzozoans that have made this group so prolific and successful. (1/3)

By using microscopy, genomics, transcriptomics and bioinformatics, @varsh_mathur and colleages present us a glimpse of a very understudied group of organisms like diatoms and their parasites.

new work: "Coral reef protection is fundamental to human rights" -> using a human rights framework to hasten protection of coral reefs & highlighting the strong ties to human well-being onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/… .. Kudos to @emmafcamp & co-authors! @UniKonstanz
Coral reefs support more than 1 billion people, so their loss would have significant ecological consequences as well as serious repercussions for communities worldwide. Check out our perspective on the link between reef consideration & human rights

The 'shopping bag' model proposes that genes acquired from transient partners builds the repertoire needed for stable endosymbiont integration. Here we show how prok-to-euk HGT can augment existing functions to shape an entirely separate endosymbiotic interaction

I want to thank everyone who helped shape this incredible story - my former colleagues and friends in Tom Richards' lab (@AncestralState) at @OxfordBiology, and our amazing collaborators @MESSorensen, @GC_Drew, @dunkie_c, and Michael Brockhurst. It's been great!
