please note the "don't be an asshole" bit. i mostly wrote about this tweet both because it seemed like a fun etymology to look into, and because of the amount of people in the replies accepting the veracity of info from an ig meme page without question retchlanguagenotebook.wordpr…

long time no tweet. i'm writing a blog post about (fittingly) a tweet i saw.
a small blog post about the effort, recent and ongoing, to create environments to promote the use of ladino online. this is related to the research i'm doing at the moment, and my first blog post related to a passion of mine: diasporic jewish languages. tinyurl.com/7xv32pus

for those of you interested in reading my very unprofessional linguistic inquiries and rants from a couple of classes from my M.A., those are also available here, as well as part 1 of a write-up on my presentation at Gender Challenge 21. tinyurl.com/yyn9sa93

absolutely worth getting up at 4:00 AM (and sifting through hours of incel rhetoric) to present at #GenderChallenge this morning!! i really enjoyed all of the lightning talks and look forward to watching the recorded talks i missed yesterday!!

long time no tweet -- popping in to update that i'm giving a lightning-round talk about digital misogyny later this month! currently working on a judeo-spanish/ladino project (hoping with fingers crossed that it can serve the greater sephardi community)!!
Anyway, I'll be virtually presenting in the Czech Republic today!

I really can't remember if I use capitalization on this account because I use it so infrequently and have no established academic persona BUT I presented in Session B for those interested. 7:24 to 27:30 is me! fb.watch/5yhNfG2KUM/

working on archiving 4chan data as i type this because anons and myself are both worried that the site will somehow be deplatformed and i want my corpus to be way bigger than the 25k words it was at for my last project (now at 38k)

anyone with access to data from either chansites or vulnerable white supremacist hotbeds please let me know, all of this really needs to be archived (wayback or archive.is) so we can study it in the future.

the internet isn't "forever" in the way that our parents and teachers threatened that it was. treat it like it is when you're acting for yourself, treat it like ephemera when it's something you need.

so this is why i think linguistics courses should be integrated into english degrees.

to those arguing that identifying an individual without specifying gender isn't the same as identifying a nonbinary individual: it is literally a personal pronoun outside of the english binary of gendered pronouns. (see merriam-webster quoted in npr, oed).

anyway: language changes, and if your language ideology fails to adapt even when institutions like dictionaries (that are now used in the classrooms that prepared you for your degree) have, you may want to consider rethinking why you hold to it.
in light of that last rt, i'd like to make it clear that i hope the current momentum of the blm movement carries on. white people seem to have done a lot of forgetting since ferguson (and every other state-sanctioned murder of Black americans).

these institutions will continue to perpetuate the anti-Black violence that they're designed to unless they're constantly challenged by all Americans, meaning that we need to speak out against injustice whenever we see it. no breaks.
1
those affected by racism don't get to take a break, and by allowing ourselves to ignore injustice we show that we no longer care. there is no room for halfhearted allyship. the status quo will never change if we continue to prioritize white comfort over Black lives.

Getting annoyed with the DMs and txt messages warning me to be careful posting about recent events cause it could affect my future match/employment. I can't be more clear: Any institution that finds me posting about the value/dignity of black lives "controversial" is NOT for me
