One of my absolute favorite classes to teach: Porter on standardized time. So: before modern clocks, we often kept *diurnal time*. Like: there are 24 hours in the day. 6 AM = sunrise, 6 PM = sunset. This is a completely different way of keeping time. 🧵:

This whole thread is great, but this forest-from-a-roundabout really stuck with me. Everyone loves to talk about the strides Paris has made with cycling, but the massive investment in greening the city deserves equal credit for why these changes have been so popular.

There’s something about these pre-recorded Apple announcements that feel like an airline safety video.

It’s difficult to understand how @SF_emergency shut these down without fully allocated funding for the work. Our city should not be solely reliant on opt-in cell/data networks in an emergency. missionlocal.org/2023/08/dis…

@SFMTA_Muni Is there any indication when predictions will improve? They’ve been generally bad/unreliable for many months now, particularly awful around termini departure times, and some are almost useless (eg California Cable Car.)

Map bus locations are also unreliable and will suddenly jump by many blocks, despite claiming to have been last updated seconds earlier on a given block—making it even more challenging to guess my way around the bad predictions.

@SFMTA_Muni Any updates on fixing predictions? Or is this a @transitapp issue? Here’s a great example this morning which happens every day. Predictions: 15, 16, 19 Actual: 2, 7, 14

Kind of nuts seeing how well the AI does at producing code. Big societal question now is, how do we increase the number of students with liberal arts degrees in order to prepare for the jobs of tomorrow?

The transformation of people's lives when through-traffic is kept off the streets is astonishing. Low traffic neighbourhoods bring communities back to life. But the new barbarism is waging war on them. theguardian.com/commentisfre…

I actually quite love tunnel tops, but 100% agreed the biggest issue is the gap between the tunnels. I also agree that the road should be more parkway and less freeway. The part east of the tunnels where the marshland is “restored” is ruined by the roar of 65 mph cars.

FWIW a parkway was the original vision. Caltrans just basically didn’t know how to actually make it into not a freeway since that’s what they do. All things considered they did a better job than they often do, though not saying much.

It baffles me how anyone can grapple w/ recalling @chesaboudin & also claim to support criminal justice reform. Boudin isn't perfect, but he's done a hell of a job putting us on a better path. Scapegoating fear is easy; real social justice is hard work. sfgate.com/elections/article…

@RecParkSF Have you considered having a separate line for food vs carousel tickets? Crazy slow line as people order large food orders…

Still a problem..! @RecParkSF Food carousel tickets at the same window is still not great. > 30 minutes to get a $2 ticket! 😞

what we need is a Democratic Party that isn’t the Democratic Party like a party that believes the things Democrats purport to believe, but actually acts the way you’d expect someone to act if they believed those things

I have said it before and I will say it again: Under my watch, no person will ever be prosecuted for making decisions about their reproductive health. I will continue to fight to protect the rights of women and all people to control their bodies and choices. 1/

The fires burned for 3 days after the 1906 Earthquake. And perhaps no building better illustrates the progress of the fire, as well as the aftermath of the disaster, than 1896 Market Street (blue arrow). 1/10
