reggae.llc/artists/116683 Today marks 78 years since Jackie Mittoo was born! The keyboardist is responsible for the bubble pattern, how many thousands of reggae records have had that rhythm? Brought the organ to the forefront. The band leader at Studio One - musical directory, keyboardist, arranger. Keyboardist for The Skatalites, just fire some up and truly enjoy. We only had him for 42 years, but he changed reggae forever. #reggae #music #jamaica #JackieMittoo #birthday #onthisday

reggae.llc/artists/117937 Happy Birthday to H.R.! Born on this day in 1956. Frontman of Bad Brains, furious punk plus reggae - groundbreaking. While Bad Brains' 1982 H.R.'s breakthrough, give the 1989 album Singin' in the Heart or the most recent - Let Luv Lead (The Way) if you want the laidback stress-free vibes. #reggae #music #jamaica #HR #birthday #onthisday

A true legend has passed. Lowell “Sly” Dunbar, born May 10, 1952 passed away yesterday at age 73 at his home in Kingston, Jamaica. A drummer and one-half of the iconic reggae rhythm duo Sly & Robbie. Estimates say that he released 200,000 songs. If he started on his first birthday, that's more than 7 records per day. What an absolute superstar. Sly & Robbie as a duo released more than 250, and that doesn't count collaborations with Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Grace Jones, Bob Dylan, the Rolling Stones, Madonna, and, literally, countless others. Sly is unquestionably one of the most influential musicians in reggae, dub, and dancehall, shaping the sound of Jamaican music for decades. The "One Drop" style, the "Rub A Dub" sound, "Bam Bam," "Murder She Wrote," ok, I'm not going to go on. You already know. This is not one of those cases where he went unrecognized in his lifetime - Sly & Robbie earned 13 Grammy nominations and had two wins. Some rare justice in this world, praise be. Rest In Power, Sly. Your music will always live on.

If you're into a soulful voice and deep reggae roots, I highly recommend rerouting the GPS and heading to his house. He was making Rocksteady in '67, so you've got a full day ahead of you. #reggae #music #jamaica #RonnieDavis #LegacyLivesOn #RestInPower #ForeverInSound

reggae.llc/artists/387087 Today marks 47 years since Busy Signal was born! Busy Signal first singles were high-energy dancehall emphasizing rhythm and swagger. He then moved in a Roots direction, exploring themes such as perseverance, social pressure, spirituality, and self-reflection. Recently, he's taking roots instrumentation into a modern production mindset, with live basslines and skanking guitars, hooks that work in clubs. Key albums to know: Step Out (2006), Loaded (2012), Reggae Music Again, and Spiritual (2023) #reggae #music #jamaica #BusySignal #birthday #onthisday

reggae.llc/artists/4969 Rabbit-hole alert -> today marks 68 years since the birth of Adrian Sherwood! A British Dub pioneer, he stayed true to the roots, producing many Jamaican artists and collaborating with Lee "Scratch" Perry. But he's not a purist - Industrial, Rock, Film and now pioneering ReggaeEDM (a term new to me, but whatever, journalists gonna journal) which includes Reggaestep, Jungle, and Dubstep. Something for everyone, anyways. Happy Birthday Adrian! #reggae #music #jamaica #AdrianSherwood #birthday #onthisday

reggae.llc/releases/6529018 On this day in 2015, Stand High Patrol, the French reggae sound system known for their roots and dub influences, released "A Matter Of Scale." This album reflects the band's commitment to social issues, addressing themes of unity and resistance in a post-colonial context. The first time I heard Stand High Patrol in 2012 took me a LONG time to figure out they were from Brittany. Truly worldwide this music. #reggae #music #jamaica #StandHighPatrol #reggaehistory
