Which are the top 20 countries for battery energy storage capacity? In the infographic below, produced by @VisualCap, using data from Rho Motion’s BESS database, we can see that China accounts for approximately two thirds of the installed capacity of grid scale BESS worldwide. However, in the coming years other markets will grow significantly, fuelled by falling lithium-ion cell prices, and renewables buildout. Within Europe, the UK has by far the largest installed capacity with 7.5GWh. Other notable markets include Australia and Chile which in recent years have built out significant capacity. Elsewhere the industry remains in its nascency, with market maturity and pipeline development yet to be fully realised. How are US automakers responding to the fading EV tax credit? With the EV tax credit expected to be phased out, many OEMs are working to maximise its impact while it lasts. Currently, all new EV purchases that qualify for the 30D tax credit are eligible for the full $7,500. Meanwhile, leasing deals are leveraging the $7,500 commercial vehicle tax credit, with more than half of those sampled offering an effective monthly cost below 1% of MSRP—typically a strong value indicator. What EV market share do Chinese OEMs have overseas? In the below infographic, produced by the team at @VisualCap , we can see that China holds 62% of the global EV market. Over 17 million EV units were sold in 2024, as Chinese manufacturers aggressively pursued international opportunities with affordable vehicles that undercut local competitors. However, market access has varied significantly across regions. The US and Canada are the only markets where Chinese-made EVs have no presence. The US has taken a firm stance against Chinese EVs, imposing a 100% tariff in 2024, and more recently enacting laws banning Chinese technology in EVs on US roads.
