The trillion dollar question. Why are COVID cases increasing while deaths are decreasing? The answer is simple. It's called Simpson's paradox and it's the result of incorrectly pooling data and arriving at a false conclusion. A thread 1/9 #COVID19#ThursdayThoughts
Just pointing out that the @UWOcean twitter account is run by graduate students and that if you want to get my attention (please do) then email me (rickkeil@uw.edu) or use the school's online anonymous feedback tool. I rarely check this twitter account.
Possibly the most exciting morning I’ve had in a while. Rode with the TGT from the locks to MSB! And got to see so many people from @UWOcean (from a distance) and Seattlites come out to welcome her home. @UWEnvironment@unols
.@rickkeil Any updates. It’s past 8AM and there’s no sign of the TGT heading to the locks. Instead it seems to be enjoying a long small boat photo session
I’m imagining what would be happening if it were Black people across the nation defying stay-at-home orders and demonstrating in large groups against the law.
Riot units would be breaking up rallies. Tear gas would be flying. Jails would be filling up. Trump would be raging.
My brother died last night. Alone. His wife was not permitted to be with him. His daughters were kept from seeing him. Please explain to me how dRump has made America great again. Ignoring issues does not address them. He has not made anything great. Ever.
UW Oceanography has gone completely online. If you are part of our local community and you need to go to school one last time, please email me the details. rickkeil@uw.edu
Our entry to @rickkeil's pretzel challenge together with what's left of coffee cake that came out of the oven earlier today. @Quora says "What distinguishes a bagel is that the dough is boiled before it is baked" but since our pretzels are boiled, how do they differ from bagels?
Having a shot at @rickkeil's soft pretzel challenge (ocean.washington.edu/story/T…). After about 5 minutes I dumped his 18-step recipe in favor of something a little simpler (foodnetwork.com/recipes/alto…). Now the dough is rising and we are having a family argument about the best toppings.
Always a great day when you get mail from wonderful people.
By my count, we last sailed together in June 2013, @rickkeil. We need to make that happen again. You collect the sinking particles, and I'll poke holes in the bottom of the ocean.
