In @MLS MD1, the @NERevolution showed a new wrinkle - the ability to operate out of tight spaces and keep the ball. This is an improvement on the '24 season, where they were middle of the pack for take-ons, and near the bottom for dispossessions... 1/2

The #NERevs attack has been 'Give it Gil' - Capi has been on an island (er, a hill?) - who will be the support? They've not yet seen the truly top-end attacking talent that #ATLUTD brings - the 5 stripes are earning attacking contributions from across their side.

The back 5 is a departure from the traditional Porter approach - respect from #nerevs for the front four of #ATLUTD

Notes from 90 The revs chances are much like the lines on the pitch last night - faint but present. The attack saw some moments - a few good balls from Langoni Carles and good work from Ganago (though too many shots left wanting). The downfall of this attack has been the lack of any sustained pressure. Half chances and hopeful balls arent enough to earn results. The 55’ sub looked to change the shape to a 433 at times, which struggles to manage much against a back 5. Corners were some of the best chances of the night - finding heads from Langoni and Ceballos. The back line was strong, but switched off for just a moment, allowing the sole goal of the evening. Miller’s bright night was dimmed by a missed mark. And how many times can the pbp use the word peg before we say ‘stop trying to make peg work.’ #NERevs

Even by doubling their SoT in MD6, #NERevs still sit last in @MLS (along with fellow ozempic-led attackers #HoldItDown). @MattDoyle76 called out the Revs lack of attacking movement and he's right: Poor movement --> few key passes --> few SoT --> no goals (of their own) scored from the run of play.

Notes from 90 with the #NERevs 3 goals this season - OG FK, PK - none of their own from the run of play. Attack outdid their entire total of SoT for the season - came in with 5, added 6. Ganago threatened out wide, tho seemed more comfortable in and around the 18, and made the runs that were needed. Needs to finish, but looks a blade of plastic turf away from that breakthrough. Luca was far more free and created chances. He is decisive, tho at times another option - namely his own shot - might be the better choice. The athleticism of the FBs - Miller and Feingold - made an attacking difference. The defensive spine was creased too many times.  Forsberg found acres of space, and was unchallenged as the backline retreated inside their own 18. He was fantastic for RBNY. The commitment to defend from the front 4 has been admirable, but it means there is no outlet nor stretch from the 9 or wings. Sure - play it out the back, but know when to say when and don't overinvite the press. Either add more tempo or get it to safety.

#NERevs have been off-target thus far - is today the day they find the goal?

Of those 31 players with as many SoT, 4 (Pec, Yeboah, Dreyer, Chicho) have more than 20 shots, nearing #NERevs total of 30 through their first four matches.

Going into @MLS MD6, the best are pulling away from the rest. #vwfc, #SDFC, #DOOP are rightfully thriving #Sounders are underperforming their attacking surplus, tho injuries threaten a promising season. On the other side... #RCTID and #Rapids96 have overcome attacking disadvantages thanks to some early xGoodness #NERevs and #CFMTL carry massive attacking deficits that will need to be addressed to avoid the spoon race.

Just a few years ago, @MLS was built on superstars carrying a team. Now, the days of that sole dominant DP are numbered. Sides with an attack that is too concentrated are earning few xGs. Playing thru just a few isn't good enough. Looking at you, #Rapids96 #lagalaxy #TFCLive #rctid #NERevs

Safe don’t score. And this side is playing it safe. Notes from 90 after MD4… The #NERevs may not have many xG, but they sure are strong at preventing their own chances. Treating the final 3rd like a first time cold plunger dipping a limb in and then out of the ice bath, this team plays itself out of attacking positions consistently. Where will the goals come from? Ganago looks the part sometimes, though there are rarely any connections to be made. The ‘give it Gil’ is maddening and more pronounced than ever. Too much recycling by playing back to Capi going away from goal (and 30 yards out). Credit to the center backs for their athleticism and handles. This is a strong pairing, though they can be caught upfield and countered. The speed of the FBs is not what it needs to be to cover.

On attack, the Revolution have been a Polite Disagreement, registering just 4 shots on target. Across MLS, there are 17 PLAYERS with 4 or more shots on target. A sign of hope: this #NERevs side brings a better handle than previous sides, helpful in the narrow confines of the baseball field in their tie with #NYCFC

The defensive improvement has been a ~relative~ bright spot for the #NERevs thus far, conceding half of what they did per match in '24. They're slightly better than the RoMLS in GA, xG against, and SoT... ...but they're below league average across other defensive metrics.

It's just not working for the #NERevs. No hint of attack, not urgency. They can keep the ball, but show little intention of advancing it. The defensive third is stout, while the midfield lines played matador to the quick-countering bulls of #DOOP Notes from 90 >>

The left side gave the attack a glimmer of hope, with Sands and Ganago combining well, though largely in the middle third. There is skill; Carles, Ganago, Luca, Yusuf, Ceballos, and Feingold each produced moments alone, though they have yet to combine meaningfully. #NERevs

Porter painted himself into a corner, carrying a bench of few attackers, which yielded 82's unexpected and ineffective use of Buck at LB & Bye at CDM. Defeat was in hand prior to 90 7, but the stoppage-time goal raised the white flags and lowered heads and shoulders. #NERevs

What do the #nerevs need to fix to break their 180-minute goal drought? Here's what jumps out: 1. Losing the middle 3rd: the touch stats are clear: Across the first 2 MDs, opponents have won ~100 more touches/match in the middle 3rd... translating to fewer in att3rd, too.

2. Passive possession: the #NERevs have made the fewer progressive passes in @MLS and have given up nearly the most (24th in league). Meanwhile, #DOOP has held a lead for more than 120 minutes across 2 MDs, and hasn't needed to push possession. A change of mindset, if not tactics, is likely needed to find more chances in Foxboro.

#doop drops into Foxboro on Saturday on the heels of consecutive 4 goal outbursts. Philly is outperforming their attacking and defensive xG (along with Bruce's bunch #Quakes74, who've got a ~5 goal bump so far). #nerevs are about at expectation (covered up in the viz by #AllForCincy who are in a similar spot)

Ch … Ch… Change (needed) Chase: the Revs spent 2/3rds of the match chasing Nagbe & co. Choked: Columbus choked and stifled any Revs possession. Change is coming after creating few chances from open play; .6 xG in 180 listless minutes of no-ttack. notes from 90 >> #nerevs

Columbus is a terrific possession team. The moment the ball turns over they keep it. They wore out the middle third. They are missing their punch, though. They are a mid-table team until they replace the creativity they lost. #nerevs

Shulte picked out some good passes into midfield. Ivacic did not. His long balls produced little, and a slow wind-up nearly cost him. Cold-weather matches are more frigid in cavernous stadiums. #nerevs
