Column: Europa redden met een formulier In Europa mag je tegenwoordig nauwelijks nog een schuurtje bouwen zonder stikstofrapport, vleermuisonderzoek, klimaateffectscan, participatieavond, genderimpactanalyse en een rituele dans rond een warmtepomp, maar wanneer miljoenen Europeanen zich zorgen maken over migratie, woningnood, sociale druk en culturele fragmentatie, dan heet dat ineens “gevaarlijk sentiment”. Dus wat doen burgers? Ze vullen een formulier in. Een formulier. Geen Revolutie met hooivorken of barricades. Nee, gewoon via een officieel Europees burgerinitiatief. Exact het democratische loket dat Brussel zélf ooit trots presenteerde als bewijs van Europese inspraak. En nu is plotseling iedereen geschokt. Want het verkeerde volk gebruikt het juiste formulier. Blijkbaar was burgerparticipatie vooral bedoeld als decoratie. Zoals zo’n plastic stuur in een kinderauto: je mag eraan draaien, zolang de echte richting al vastligt. En dus zien we het bekende patroon terug: bezorgde burgers worden geen burgers genoemd, maar “populisten”, “extremisten”, “nationalisten” of, de absolute jackpot van intellectuele luiheid, “gevaar voor de democratie”. Omdat ze… een formulier invullen. Misschien is dát wel het echte probleem van Europa geworden: niet dat mensen hun continent willen redden, maar dat bestuurders zich steeds openlijker gedragen alsof het continent hun eigendom is.
