I didnāt plan to write this song.
But last September, during the height of the U.S. election cycle, I found myself overwhelmed by one repeating thought:
āWhat if that were my child in the DariĆ©n Gap?ā
That lawless jungle stretch between Colombia and Panama has become a deadly path for migrantsāmany of them unaccompanied childrenāseeking hope at the U.S. border. What they often find instead is unimaginable suffering, and a system that repeatedly fails them.
So I wrote āHappy Itās Not Meāāa protest song against the broken immigration policies that leave these kids vulnerable to trafficking, abuse, and silence.
And I couldnāt keep it to myself.
