My 3 hour run today turned into a 2 hour run/walk and a 1 hour walk. Old me would have fought through my calf tightness/knee soreness. Slightly more experienced me still got a great session in with much less risk.
Avoid big mistakes
For a recreational runner, training isn’t so much about precision, it’s more about avoiding big mistakes.
If you’re agonizing over whether to do 6 x 1000m vs 8 x 800m intervals or a 20 vs 22 mile long run…you’ll be fine with either I bet.
Let’s say you’ve got a sore throat before those intervals, or you’ve developed knee tendinitis right before that long run. Those are the decisions that really matter, those are the potential big mistakes you need to avoid.
I’m skipping the intervals and doing at most a short easy run. Megadosing Vitamin C and Zinc, eating pho, sitting in the sauna, getting a good nights sleep, trying to kill that cold in its tracks.
I’m skipping the long run and doing a big bike ride instead, split squat isos, leg extensions and a bunch of strength training to get on top of that tendonitis.
Runners who get to the starting line healthy and fit aren’t training perfectly, they are just avoiding big mistakes, making adjustments when necessary.
Forget about following your training plan precisely. Take each day as it comes and make smart decisions. You’ll do well on that alone 🏃🏼♂️
