German-Jewish refugees who eavesdropped on captured Nazi generals on UK soil during WW2 heard every boast, confession, and atrocity when the prisoners thought no one was listening. This is the remarkable life of Fritz Lustig, one of MI9’s secret listeners: (🧵)

Thank you, Helen! As you know, he hugely appreciated all the work you did on this. X
Fritz Lustig was the one who first got me started on the true story of the 'Secret Listeners'. He said to me, "Did we do anything that made any difference to the outcome of the war? What about us secret listeners, Helen? You’ve told everyone’s story about the other 10,000 Germans who fought for Britain, but what about us? What about us secret listeners?" I could never have imagined the remarkable journey we would share together. Though he is sadly no longer with us, his legacy, alongside that of the hundred Secret Listeners, is now firmly cemented in the history books. Before he passed, I was able to give him the answers he had long sought... and yes, he absolutely did make a real and lasting difference to the outcome of the Second World War.
