Accelerating warming means a quadratic trendline. And it seems to fit pretty well, showing a current anomaly of 1.38°C over the 1850-1900 pre-industrial baseline and even faster warming ahead.

Interesting and relevant graph for #MDM4U discussion about Normal Distribution. Graphing the standard deviations as a line graph.
Global sea surface temperatures, aside from being at a modern-era record high of 21.21°C for the third consecutive day, are also in crazy-town territory for the standard deviation, yesterday at 5.68σ above the 1982-2011 mean. That's 1-in-150 million for a normal distribution.

In a year of very sad news for sentient life, this may be the saddest news yet: "When the sea ice breaks earlier, chicks can fall into the water and drown, or they may drift away on floes and the adults just lose them and then they would starve to death" cnn.com/2023/08/24/world/emp…

More climate math related to rate of change.
Great thread on the exponential increase in the amount of water that air can hold as temperature increases. Note the exponential part, which is quite important. Did I mention the increase is EXPONENTIAL?

Sea Ice - mathematical models, and why predictions are important. #iteachmath
For those who may not be up to speed on the long-term consequences of an ice-free Arctic (Blue Ocean Event), this is a great overview from 2019: youtube.com/watch?v=qo3cznpf…

Rate of change of the rate of change. Math matters. #iteachmath #mdm4u
I don't recall seeing this before. I take the 12 month running mean for CO₂ and then compute the growth over the running mean from 12 months earlier, then plot these differences. Also, a trendline. This shows "average" yearly CO₂ growth in a way that smooths things out.

And by σ I mean standard deviation. If you don't understand what this means, it's just a tad too complicated to explain in tweets. But essentially these values are far far beyond anything even vaguely normal when considering the odds of them happening by purely by chance.

Real life math #iteachmath #mdm4u
It finally happened, breaking 5 sigma, the same statistical threshold physicists used to prove the existence of the Higgs boson. At 2,700,000 km² below the 1991-2020 mean, Antarctic sea ice extent was 5.14σ below the mean, roughly a 1-in-7,400,000 chance.

Interesting article on latest sea ice models - we looked at how this data could be used in #mcr3u at Math Heads Day recently. Data can be found at nsidc.org/arcticseaicenews/s…

When I started reporting on climate change, the prediction was the Arctic could be sea-ice-free in summer by the 2070s. Now? By the 2030s. nytimes.com/2023/06/06/clima…

Circulatory system - captures it well. When thinking about equity and access to higher level Math, we need to re-think about how all Ss can learn and find joy in Algebra.
Why we need to keep algebra central to K to 12 math. 1. Born of practicality 2. Historical and cultural significance 3. Language/circulatory system of mathematics 4. Aids logical and creative thinking 5. Massive importance in today's problem solving

Unpopular opinion: There are two tendencies that are, by themselves, devastating indictments of our entire civilisation. The first is gardening for aesthetics rather than biodiversity. Our landscapes are deathscapes and we call them "pretty", WTAF.

This is getting ridiculous. OISST provides a real-time daily index of ocean surface temperature (60 S - 60 N). For the last month it has been continuously reading higher than in any previous year and still shows no sign of settling.

Beyond cup stacks and renting stuff… Why modelling and rate of change really matters. #MTH1W #iteachmath
This is hard news to share but a new study from the NOAA just found CO2 levels have hit their highest level in recorded human history. Worse, the RATE of increate is rising. We are in unchartered territory and we do not even fully grasp the extent of the danger ahead. (1/9)🧵

Good reminder - "triangulation is not an equilateral triangle". It can look different for different students. This has been one of the biggest changes in my practice over the last few years. Still figuring it out #destreaming #iteachmath
