then, when it's pointed out to them that this claim is false, assume (aggressively, usually) that one disputes the point itself.
Simple example:
"This evil guy murdered 4 people last year!!"
"Actually he mordered 2, the other 2 victims survived without permanent injury."

Sometimes I feel a bit sad about the books I got and then never read. Even more so for techincal books than for fiction because for the latter there's at least a chance that I'll read and enjoy it next year - or in retirement, whatever. But the tech books are obsolete by now. /1

Something that never bothered me as a reader but is causing me significant worries now that I try to write a novel myself: if some characters have a longer conversation, let's say the story requires it to be 2h, but then, when reading the dialogue that's actually spelled out /1

on the pages, it's clear that it can be said/read in just 15 minutes, what do I do? Do I have to explicitly state that "they talked some more about some other stuff"? Or do people automatically accept that what they are shown is just like a "summary highlight reel" of the /2

full conversation and they just believe that the rest was similar just without any new key info that would need to be made explicit? Or is there some other, subtle trick that authors use to cover this discrepancy that I just never noticed when reading?
