भगवान श्रीकृष्ण ने कहा, "क्षमा करें आदरणीय माता जी, क्या आपने मुझे पिछले जन्म में चौदह साल के लिए वनवास में नहीं भेजा था।"
माता देवकी आश्चर्यचकित हो गईं और फिर पूछा, "बेटा कृष्ण, यह कैसे संभव है? तुम ऐसा क्यों कह रहे हो?"
भगवान श्रीकृष्ण ने कहा, "माता, आपको अपने पूर्व जन्म के बारे में कुछ भी स्मरण नहीं है। परंतु तब आप कैकेई थीं और आपके पति राजा दशरथ थे।"
माता देवकी ने और ज्यादा आश्चर्यचकित होकर पूछा, "फिर महारानी कौशल्या कौन हैं?"
भगवान श्रीकृष्ण ने कहा, "वही तो इस जन्म में माता यशोदा हैं। चौदह साल तक जिनको पिछले जीवन में मां के जिस प्यार से वंचित रहना पड़ा था, वह उन्हें इस जन्म में मिला है।"
अर्थात्, प्रत्येक प्राणी को इस मृत्युलोक में अपने कर्मों का भोग भोगना ही पड़ता है। यहां तक कि देवी-देवता भी इससे अछूते नहीं हैं।
अतः अहंकार के बंगले में कभी प्रवेश नहीं करना चाहिए और मनुष्यता की झोपड़ी में जाने से कभी संकोच नहीं करना चाहिए!
