Conservation, Movement Ecology. Postdoc, Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior. Raptors, pelicans, foxes - if it moves and can carry a GPS tag, I'm in.
Amazing to hear @ediramaal deliver his heartfelt observations at @COP29_AZ on the lack of political will to take the big bold actions we all know are necessary to really tackle the #ClimateEmergency. @JustStop_Oil
We Albanians are used to being lectured, not to being the lecturers. However, after carbon emissions increased once again from COP28 to COP29, despite all the big words, I set aside my previously prepared speech and wrote from the heart before taking the floor.
You can watch my remarks at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in the attached video👇

Some see applied and fundamental science as a “short blanket dilemma” — covering one side leaves the other exposed.
But others, including myself, believe we can do both effectively. Conservation translocations are one promising example of this synergy.

Captive-reared vultures also showed reduced efficiency in their primary flight mode, spending more time soaring per meter progressed while gliding. But again, only during their 1st migration.

Our results offer valuable insights into animal #ecology and #conservation, demonstrating how conservation translocations can advance both fields.
Many more questions are waiting to be answered using this platform, we just need to ask them.
Why did the pelican (blue) land at the same place as the vulture (green)? Took me a few minutes to realize that this is just another incident of GPS-jamming that is becoming more and more problematic for wildlife research (and other things) around the world.

Not finishing an assignment in the time I scheduled for it: "I was inefficient"
Finishing ahead of time: "It was easier than I thought"
This is so cool - a black kite we tagged last year seems to want to be near humans (eventually landing in a damp site), but completely avoiding the city itself.

New paper out! 🚨🚨🚨
I am very excited to share our latest research, where we used telemetry data to assess the year-round roost use of resident Egyptian vultures in southwestern Spain.

Hi #AcademicChatter and especially #postdoc.
How do you manage the time between your current position and the things (papers?) you didn't finish from previous positions?
Even the mighty eagle has to learn to fly, optimising the extraction of atmospheric energy with experience published in @eLife. Only through time they unravel the full potential of their morphing energy landscapes. @elham_nourani@Vogelwarte_scie@animaltracking
Our first golden eagle study @safilabmpi is published in @eLife! We propose using the ecological niche concept to discuss energy landscape variations, and show that for golden eagles, the realized energy landscape expands with age elifesciences.org/articles/9…
Germany has welcomed us with great weather and beautiful landscapes. It is still beautiful but there is a very noticeable decrease in insects and flowers and it is getting cold.
I guess this is the time to say goodbye to the summer?
