This rare early medieval brooch was made around AD 800–900, and was found near Cheddar in south west England in 2020.
It’s an elaborate object, likely owned by a high-status person, but the circumstances of its discovery suggest it was lost rather than buried for safekeeping.
ALT A circular, silver-and-copper coloured brooch decorated with swirling animal forms and interlocking geometric patterns. The rim is notched and there are small round balls affixed around the design.
