76 years ago today, the Empire Windrush arrived at Tilbury Docks 🧔 To celebrate #WindrushDay is to appreciate how migrants define Britain in so many positive ways, and to recognise that the fight for justice for the victims and families of the Windrush Scandal is still ongoing.

The government say they want to help people with mental health problems get back into work. If so, they need to be serious about investing in chronically underfunded mental health services. And they need to meet with the experts. We await the full details of the consultation. 3/3

The Prime Minister’s speech has shown once again that the Government has a worrying blindspot over both the causes of the mental health emergency and the support available for those who are suffering. There is an important conversation to be had about the risks of overmedicalising distress, but that should be about how we respond to distress - not underplaying or denying its existence in the first place. There are a range of factors driving the rise in mental ill health, including the cost of living crisis, rising inequality, the legacy of the pandemic, implications of the ever-changing technological landscape and the chronic under-resourcing of mental health services. We know more people than ever before are reaching crisis point and this is placing unprecedented strain on services, particularly services for children and young people. This requires a comprehensive policy response from the Government, with a combined focus on prevention, investment and reforms to services. Not tokenistic measures that risk harming some of the most vulnerable people in our society. theguardian.com/politics/202…
