Let me tell you something extraordinary about Beans production in Nigeria
Before beans are harvested, farmers usually apply pesticides up to 8 times against pests. The main chemical used is called Dichlorvos.
These chemicals leave a residue in the food, the normal world standard acceptable residue limit is 0.01mg per Kg, Nigerian beans contains up to 4.6mg per kg of Dichlorvos i.e our beans contained 460 times more than the acceptable residue limit.
Let me break it down more
If the world standard accepts 1 stone in one cup of Garri, Nigeria Garri has 460 stones in one cup.
The beans you ate recently have 460 times more dangerous chemical residue than anywhere in the world.
But something extraordinary happened.
Nigerian Biotechnologists came through for farmers and consumers
The reason for the 8x chemical is Pod-Borer pest. Scientists in Samaru Zaria created a modified bean variety. This variety of beans is resistant to the Maruca pest that destroys the pod of the black-eyed beans plant.
This means farmers spend less in cultivating beans, less chemical in our food, more harvest and cheaper food for the country.
Have you noticed why our Black-eyed beans (white beans) are very cheap and clean?
