I've seen a company spend 5 figures on a "Healthcare Integration Engine" that was only used to shell out to a custom built executable. Turned it into an expensive cron daemon.

"Just knowing what a product can do" is legitimately a thing. You should see the world-class stuff my firm has for 1 feature. I'm telling you, offer to take ownership of things. My career is just iteratively asking to do shit nobody gave a second thought about. Yeah, security!

As somebody who worked on a low-code solution for 6 years, I completely agree. Enabling SMEs to write logic is great but then we were left with the work of teaching them SDLC. And guess who was still needed to integrate that low-code solution? Developers.

This is one of the things that makes me side eye low code a little. Who maintains the low code solutions? What does the SDLC look like for these low code things? What happens when it breaks because of network connectivity issues? Software is such a leaky abstraction ….

My daughter is working on a Y2K presentation and was asking for code snippets showing how a year > 1999 could result in a failure. Could fake some (age calculation, maybe hw heartbeat failure?) but I would rather have real code... anyone have any old COBOL with a Y2K bug? :)
