there is a bunch of controversy regarding PDKU, and i do not want to add to ungrounded or simply hateful discourse, but unfortunately i do have one (small) piece of critique for
@plzdontkillus. its a take i havent seen others mention before, so that is why i'll share it here. obviously im happy to hear other takes, feel free to comment!
PDKU focuses on shortform video content, obviously, since that is how to attach to viewers' attention these days. this, in itself, is a trend that i believe PDKU organisers and others would like to see reversed . attention spans are shortening, humans are losing their ability to follow along and comprehend longer chains of reasoning, trains of thought, or even broader, longer pieces of media. i cant say this is true for all media, but it is for many media that goes viral. one example is the loss of the third verse or bridge in most pop music; a growing trend.
i, personally, dont feel that comfortable criticising this development in our species' cognitive capabilities while contributing to the vast amount of shortform media that exists. i would rather create longer pieces of media, and i think media longer than 3 minutes is already a great place to start. its unfortunate that the algorithm favors <60s videos, which means i'll have more trouble spreading the messages i want to spread. in other words, the type of media
@plzdontkillus will be expecting from us fellows is one that i'd rather actually not create, and one that i wish would just be banned from social media overall.
that is not to say that i dont think its a great idea to use exactly that capacity of shortform content (ease of going viral if done properly) as a way to spread awareness about x-risk and incite discourse. its definitely a great idea, i love that people are funding this, i love that i have the chance to contribute, and im quite certain i'll do great! i just hope that the organisers also see the value of longer content, more complex content, &c. im sure they do, obviously, maybe that just didnt fit inside the framework this time! there is just some ... unease. i hope i fit in. i hope itll be fun, too!
