This morning I sent my kids to school with a pit in my stomach. I wanted to keep them home. Wanted to keep them close. Wanted to keep them safe. But I can’t give in to the fear. I can’t let them see that I’m afraid. And I don’t want them to BE afraid. So I sent them. And just as I have done ever since the massacre at Sandy Hook, I made sure to memorize their outfits. In case of the horrific unthinkable. School shootings have been their reality for as long as they’ve been in school. They are 9 and 13 years old. And this is all they’ve ever known.
