Now that Batman: Arkham Shadow has received its final update and the Camouflaj team is moving on - hopefully to another Arkham, but even if not, whatever they work on they already have a fan in me - I just want to take a moment to express my appreciation.
Camouflaj had so many disadvantages compared to, say, WB Games Montréal, who were handed all of Arkham City's assets, likely had a much bigger budget, and got to make another third-person Arkham game that built on the success of the previous ones. That’s not to take anything away from their work and Arkham Origins, which is a solid game, but their path was much easier than what Camouflaj had to pull off.
Camouflaj had to completely reinvent the Arkham formula from the ground up - making it work in first-person, on an entirely new platform, with their own assets - while also redesigning freeflow combat to feel fluid and fun in VR using motion controls. On top of that, they had to handle their own marketing, step into massive shoes after years of drought for the series, and win people over after the mixed reception to Suicide Squad. And they did it. They pulled it all off.
So whatever your stance on the VR approach, you have to recognize that what they accomplished with this game is seriously impressive. I hope they know that people noticed.
I have so much respect for everything they pulled off, and I can’t wait to see what they do next.
