The idea that the UK should be investing in “sovereign AI capability” is the worst kind of backwards industrial policy thinking, and primarily an excuse for bored policy wonk brits to have an excuse to work on exciting AI problems instead of whatever they normally do
I’ve warned for months that America would soon restrict access to state of the art frontier AI models for national security reasons.
THIS HAS NOW HAPPENED.
Thanks to the catastrophic energy policies pursued by the Tories and Labour, Britain has virtually ZERO sovereign AI capability.
Now we will be cut off from the most powerful AI models, and will soon end up being TOTALLY AT THE MERCY of China America and others who will be able bring to bear intelligence capable of defeating all our security systems in short order.
WE MUST CHANGE COURSE NOW
Would it be nice if the UK could suddenly decide to be globally competitive in the most competitive business in the history of capitalism? Sure! Let’s vertically integrate the whole supply chain and build our own Nvidia and TSMC while we’re at it
There is zero benefit to any of this stuff. No one thinks it will produce a capability improvement relative to off the shelf. It’s all just retarded posturing for people that want to position themselves as tech forward
Popular delusion among the UK political classes of both left and right: that the UK's problems result simply from "incompetent leadership", and that when we just get the right Competent People in charge, they will be capable of fixing everything
If only the guy who was Right About Everything had engineered the chance to defacto run the country. I'm sure he'd have fixed everything and not failed almost instantly.
But that's possibly through instilling new leadership _and fundamentally reshaping what the institution is_ through aggressive top-down reform, firing lots of people and bringing in new staff, cutting out large parts of the business, etc. Elon Musk at Twitter a good example
Some of this is possible in government, but only a tiny fraction of what's possible in industry. Hence the failure of the Musk approach via DOGE, and his subsequent acceptance that he can't reform government
Tyler Cowen's recent talk on what will matter post AGI was really good.
