The obvious value of an #MPA, which places limits on human activity, is the conservation of ecosystems and marine life. They also provide opportunities for communities who were historically dependent on the harvesting economy via @dailymaverick dailymaverick.co.za/article/… #MPAs

Unfortunately it is true! St Croix Island , formerly the world's largest #AfricanPenguin colony has lost 80% of its population over the last few years! Other colonies are declining at 5 -10% per year @SANCCOB @sanccobec @BirdLife_SA @WWFSouthAfrica
I’ve seen #HowItStarted photo dated 1908. First in this eye-opening article. Devon @2OceansAquarium wrote this in 2018 citing under 21,000 breeding pairs left in wild. Last week, he told me it’s now under 10,400. Really? 4 years later over HALF are GONE? 😨aquarium.co.za/blog/entry/wh…

@penguinpromises was one of the first campaigns to raise awareness about the #AfricanPenguin. And our research showed that it was a remarkably effective behavior change campaign. But we need to do more #NotOnMyWatch. @saambr @2OceansAquarium saambr.org.za/penguin-promis…
