Gut wrenching to see four young people jailed for direct action against an arms supplier to Israel. Years in prison for protesting to save lives in Gaza, with 'terrorism' used despite no jury convicting them of it. A truly dangerous attack on the right to protest.

Crime is now being viewed through an entirely racialised lens – but only when the perpetrators aren't white. When Chas Corrigan stabbed a Saudi student to death, or Paul Doyle mowed down Liverpool fans, white people didn't have to fear being a target of collective retaliation.

Have to get something off my chest: why is it always slightly inconvenient to copy/paste email addresses? I never want to click an email address but they are always hyperlinked, making it difficult to select the text. This needs to change

Just to confirm that as the new Leader of @lambeth_council, neither I nor any member of Lambeth's Cabinet will be jetting out to Cannes for this Corporate housing conference. Refunds will be sought where possible #FreshStart
NEW: Despite facing the prospect of losing dozens of seats at the election on Thursday @LambethLabour Council Leader Claire Holland has already booked her trip to @MIPIMWorld 2027 The Corporate Real Estate Conference in Cannes, France where Politicians, Billionaire Housing Developers and Landlords meet to discuss how to make as much money as possible from property and housing. This kind of extravagance in the midst of a Housing Emergency is why Lambeth has one of the worst Borough wide records on housing not just in London but the entire UK. I hope MIPIM has a good refund policy. HT @gamecounsel

I pulled out of SXSW London, and I hope other speakers and chairs do too.
sxsw was a minor part of my trip to the uk, they totally didn’t defend me or cenk at all, they’re actual fucking losers and i will never work with them for the rest of my life. if you bought a ticket expecting to see me you should demand a refund.

I have severe concerns about the incoming Coalition in Southwark and whether it will focus on community safety and housing needs. I suspect it’ll McCrash and burn. Time will tell.

We need an end to tinkering around the edges. The public have had enough of this rip off. Andy Burnham must commit to taking water back into public ownership.
Andy Burnham says we could have a "localised public control option" for Thames Water What does that mean? Who is in charge? Where do the profits go? We need nothing less than permanent PUBLIC OWNERSHIP of Thames Water with households, workers and anti sewage groups on the board

Perhaps instead of calling for council housing to be privatised, because the existence of cheap housing is "unfair", we could make it a policy goal to increase the affordability of other types of housing
Replying to @Layo_FH
The world when nobody really wanted to live in a council flat is long gone. They are now gold dust. My mate told me he’s helping a client at work who lives in a council flat next to The Queen’s Club. It is totally unfathomable that I could ever live around there, unless I won the lottery. So I can understand why people are started to question the fairness of it all.

It's easier to imagine the end of the world than lower rents and property prices in central London

It's a fantastic day for residents in Peckham! The Planning Inspector has ruled against Berkley Homes a tiny amount of affordable homes as possible in the heart of Peckham. Building affordable homes, not luxury flats, is the only way we can tackle the housing crisis.

Estate agents offering private landlords 'guaranteed rent' deals rake in millions every month from London boroughs to house homeless families. A mini-investigation by me for the @BigIssue looks to a put a name to some of the biggest recipients: bigissue.com/news/housing/ho…

One week back on here and I see the YIMBYs have really accelerated their position. They want to cleanse London of ‘unproductive’ people. I’m guessing the essential jobs that keep our city going like policy wonk and telegraph columnist remain crucial though
In some London boroughs, 2 in 5 properties are socially rented. Vast swathes of prime, inner london land is occupied by decaying, poorly managed council housing, inhabited by an economically inactive population. My latest for the @Telegraph telegraph.co.uk/money/proper…

"Why is our capital city full of people simply 'living' in 'homes' when replacing them all could generate so much more value for shareholders and landlords?"
May 16
Replying to @Victoria_Spratt
I don’t think “41% of social housing tenants have jobs” is much of a rebuttal! This is hundreds of thousands of homes in inner London (Westminster, Chelsea, Camden) occupied by people who don’t work, while people who do work have to do long commutes to get to their jobs. That’s not defensible. Let them sell their tenancies and move further out with a big cash windfall so people who actually work can live in these homes.

Finding the Times "the state of it" podcast an enjoyable listen for the stratospheric levels of contempt Patrick Maguire has for Keir Starmer. I'm not sure anyone on the left has a lower opinion of the prime minister

Great memories of working inside the Ministry of Justice doing actor roleplay work - many of my former colleagues have remained friends! Especially the time I went down to the foyer on a lunch break - and some of the staff were on strike. First time I met @UVWunion!

We had rent controls in Britain until 1915 to 1988 and during this time housebuilding regularly hit over 300k per year. Since they were removed, the house price to income ratio has gone from 4:1 to around 8:1, and housebuilding numbers have collapsed.
Rent controls are a really terrible idea, they never work as intended and just cut supply of properties available. It’s like a lot of ideas on the left these days - it runs on vibes and nothing more.
