🚨People keep saying “the algorithm”… however it’s almost never ONE algorithm. I’m going to start a short series breaking down different types of algorithms I’ve actually worked with over the years. Early on I started off with heuristic based systems then moved to classical ML methods. Algorithms and models are not the same thing… A model is the larger structure. Many of these algorithms can operate inside a single model, and often multiple algorithms interact, stack, or chain to produce the output people refer to as “the algorithm.” Actually there’s an entire ecosystem. So when people say “the algorithm is targeting me,” what they’re usually describing is the actual behavior of a system built on a combination of algorithms. When you’re having a bad day and you react differently than usual. You then say, “I wasn’t myself.” That is who you are… I realize, how I react at my worst is actually who I am, I just didn’t have any experiences to affect me that deeply. It’s the version of you that you suppress. We make excuses for ourselves when we should make adjustments to our “TRUE” character. Not the persona that we want others to believe is always calm, good and non reactive.

I was invited to co author another peer reviewed meta analysis! As a PhD student, it’s a privilege to have scholars who’ve already reached this milestone invite me back. Focusing on my research, goals, and growth gives me so much joy. This will be my second peer reviewed paper. As Eleanor Roosevelt said, “Great minds discuss ideas; small minds discuss people…” . I’ve invested energy into small mind activity by discussing the Lively/Baldoni case and attracted that energy, wasting precious time. That case is an important issue but the quality of the discussions were mostly petty, juvenile, hateful and small minded. If we look closely at ourselves, we will realize our environment is a reflection of the choices we make. We attract other people who demonstrate this. The incessant focus on that case was not healthy. Great leaders who made “REAL” change in this world are nothing like the people who proclaim to fight for justice on this case. Sadly, I invested energy into a wall and lowered my quality as an intelligent, sentient being. It’s time to do better…
