Person who has never been to a single city other than New York:
New York is the only place where people desire to be called a “new yorker” when they weren’t born here. No one’s claiming they are Puerto Rican simply cause they lived in Puerto Rico for the last few years. Or Mexican because they moved there for awhile. Only in NY.

confession i dont get why we judge a language for how it pronounces a loanword bc im pretty sure there isnt a single language on earth that actually preserves the native pronunciation of all its loanwords. like its literally a completely natural linguistic process you guys its ok

Announced today this brilliant initiative for everyone who has been made to feel even the tiniest bit uncomfortable in a bookshop. A growing network of INCREDIBLE independent bookshops across UK and Ireland with wide range of books who welcome all of us! #choosebookshops
🧵Today we announce our #BookshopPartner programme with a first list of 25 bookshops across UK & Ireland, & more to be announced soon. This initiative builds on shared values: to connect writers & readers from all backgrounds, to be welcoming for those who may feel less welcome

I do sort of feel that the personal depth and erudition suggested by the books that I *order* should be mine to access whether I ever actually read them or not

If this were in any way true then the good people of Buenos Aires would have learnt how to fucking well let people off the train before trying to board the train themselves.
the thing that reliably distinguishes new yorkers from other americans is a reflexive awareness of when they are in the way

This is how I learnt that Americans call scampi ‘shrimp scampi’.
Sometimes when we borrow words from other languages, English can become delightfully redundant. ‘Scampi’ means “shrimp” so ‘shrimp scampi’ is basically “shrimp shrimp.” Sahara Desert = Desert Desert chai tea = tea tea naan bread = bread bread ahi tuna = tuna tuna

I finally got my dream offer from the University of Glasgow! 🇬🇧🎓❤️ Now, I'm seeking funding to make it a reality. likes or retweets would mean the world to me. Even a dot (.) in the replies helps the algorithm reach the right people! 3 replies — even Dot. — will save my dream.

Rest in peace, James Gadson… One of the most in-demand session drummers in soul, funk, and R&B, he recorded with an incredible range of artists across decades. His groove helped shape the sound of legends like Bill Withers, Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross, The Jackson 5, The Temptations, Paul McCartney, Quincy Jones, Herbie Hancock, Aretha Franklin, B.B. King, Ray Charles, Smokey Robinson, and so many more.

I was today years old when I learned that taking Peptides for 5 years made you an Academy member, award winning actor and Oscars attendee! You can tell a lot about a persons character by looking at who they’re willing to punch down towards - even in the name of comedy.

Intelligence as we know it is literally a framework that gets used to decide how human and moral people are. It's how white supremacist society decides who and what should be subject to abuse and exploitation. Of course this has eroded and corrupted our ability to seek knowledge.
What chatgpt has revealed is that a surprising large number of people want to be “seen” as intelligent, profound or insightful. Many more people than you’d assume. But they profoundly resent intellectual work or reading or study or, say, literally anything you do to get smarter

Oh boy! What a headline... Ask yourself: "What am I being asked to believe?" "Who am I being told to blame?" Take a few seconds to imagine what the Daily Mail (And Telegraph, GB News and Express) WANT you to think is going on. Let's see what's ACTUALLY happening...🧵 1/21

I read Fahrenheit 451 for the first time just last week (yes, really) and it did NOT feel like it was written over 70 years ago.
Midway through Fahrenheit 451, we learn that the U. S. government has launched a series of unprovoked wars against smaller countries, just because it can, while the population is so hypnotized by amusements & devices that hardly anyone knows the wars are taking place.

Se hizo una convocatoria pública para que todos los trombonistas de Nueva York llevaran su instrumento y despidieran a Willie Colón hoy, a la salida de su féretro de la Catedral de San Patricio, donde se celebró una misa en su honor. Mira el resultado:

Every response I’ve seen to this has been someone trying to dunk on what is *obviously* a joke. Do people think he got that emoji by searching for ‘Spain flag’?
I literally cannot name one thing that Spain 🇵🇹 does better than America

Got a new follower last week. Had a quick look at her profile and removed her as a follower when I got to a tweet claiming she’d read 370 books during 2025.
I genuinely think the worst thing the internet did to reading was convince people that finishing books is a competitive sport. You don't need to read 52 books a year. You just need to read. Books you like. At your own pace. And think about them for longer than a TikTok video.
