I'll be in Lisbon next week with @DimitriSrf and @dimamohammed_ for this work shop. I'll present on how the booing of the England men's team at Euro2020 for taking the knee became part of the 'culture wars' and wider political battles over defining racism (h/t @alanalentin)

Can't work out if Peppa is left handed and about to pull this ball for six ...or right handed and is too late on this shot and is about to wear it right in the face Hopefully the latter. Serves her right for not wearing a lid against short pitched bowling and smiling about it.

You know the olympics are on when your 75yr old dad who only watches tennis and rugby is giving you a scouting report on Victor Wembanyama.

Perhaps of interest to @DalrympleWill @tweeter_anita and some @EmpirePodUK listeners, too.
Very happy to share that the new book is landing Jan 2025, with @OUPAcademic Myths & Sanctioned Ignorance in British Immigration Discourse: Towards a linguistic sociology of absences

Replying to @CADAAD_conf
@CADAAD_conf you’ve been beautiful. Brilliant people giving brilliant papers, engaging in stimulating conversations, and as always providing excellent company. All in a stunning location. @samtbennett thank you so much. What a wonderful time. We’re very lucky.

Now, I'm not saying that #cadaad2024 has been exhausting but @DimitriSrf, Ola and I ended this evening with a discussion of what we can learn from slug mating.

In order to better understand what is going on now and the trajectories that our societies are on, we need conceptual toolkits that are robust and which take into account the recontextualisation of prior discourses. @mwkrzyzanowski

At the same time, we shouldn't be afraid of revisiting, problematising and reinterpreting concepts that are embedded in our work @AudreyAlejand

Lastly, CADAAD is unique. There is not another conference that does what CADAAD does. The respect, mutual learning, support and friendship. The engagement of everyone, from plenaries to helpers has been a joy to see and be a part of. I'm off for a lie down. See you all in 2026.

We should reflect on the double hermeneutic of our work and the often inadvertent impact our words and research (can) have within and outside our universities.

We heard from Viviane Resende and @journolinguist about the advantages viewing our data and practices from other perspectives and from other spaces.

With #cadaad2024 nearing its end it's a time to reflect, especially on some of the plenaries. 🧵

and yet I am left with the feeling that CDS can do better from taking cues from other fields and other spaces. Essentially: are CDS' own borders perhaps less porous than we hope/proclaim they are?

The conference showed that critical approaches to discourse analysis can be applied to such a wide range of topics...

Just like other social practices, DA is inherently political, even if it is isn't always Political.
