SPJ strongly condemns the conviction of @WSJ reporter Evan Gershkovich imposed by a Russian court. "Evan in no way, shape or form received any semblance of a fair and free trial," said SPJ President @AshantiBlaize. #IStandWithEvan #FreeEvan spj.org/news.asp?REF=3031

Over a century later, an immigrant garment worker in LA who I interviewed for my book told me about how her bosses lock the doors of the factory where she and her coworkers are paid by the piece.
On March 25, 1911, the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire killed 146 workers and injured dozens more. While trying to escape the fire, the workers (most of whom were immigrant women) encountered locked doors and broken fire escapes.
