today I am extracting DNA from a large female Ro that was removed from the lung of a captive garter snake that died… the pet trade likely has a great influence on the spread of this invasive snake parasite. though morphology is consistent w Ro, I will confirm ID molecularly.

I started an invasive snake lung parasite monitoring project a year ago with @TerryFarrellSU & now it’s grown big enough to have a name. SLAM - snake lungworm alliance & monitoring. Pictured are some pentatomes delivered by @am_durso & his students at FGCU !!

If you work with #seaturtle mtDNA, see supplement for tables of long-fragment haplotypes (>550bp) across species with GenBank accession # and synonymous names. 🐢🧬 For each haplotype, we included: life stages, countries, & ocean basin(s) where it's been found citation. 🧵3/5

Invasive species often have lower genetic diversity, despite adapting to new conditions. How? Lafond 2022 found bullfrogs maintained diversity at important functional loci involved with immunity. These genes help the frogs combat the fungal disease Bd. amphibiaweb.org/

And what a cool and important talk about Bd tolerance, resistance, and evo-evolutionary implications!
Can we talk about how awesome the slide design for Laura Grogan’s talk are. It’s amazing how much good slide and figure design makes a difference and makes the study so much more accessible #GARD2022

Ecstatic that my first North American snake is the black racer, this guy has obviously heard about me through the colubrid grapevine! What a welcome! The snake is part of a monitored population, just outside of Knoxville. #GARD2022 #Herpetology #Reptiles #Snakes

Awesome talk @Carlybacter !!
The combined effect of the skin microbiome and antimicrobial peptides are also often overlooked, hopefully @Carlybacter’s talk can fill these knowledge gaps, and energise us all on the topic. #GARD2022 @GARD2022
