Hammerheads are one of our absolute favorite sharks to encounter. These charismatic animals not only look cool 😎 but that hammer shaped head helps them hunt. The position of the eyes allows them to have almost 360 degree vision and that wide head is covered in ampullae of Lorenzini (electroreceptors). They use those to detect prey, like stingrays, hiding under the sand. Think of it like the shark version of a metal detector! Now a little trivia! Do you know the proper name for their heads? 〰️〰️〰️ 📸: @gbrllozada #shark #sharks #hammerheadshark #hammerhead #ocean

Happy World Wildlife Day! This is a day to celebrate wildlife, and wildlife wouldn’t exist without healthy ecosystems. We can protect sharks and all marine animals by protecting their homes. Whether it’s coral reefs, seagrass beds, mangrove forest, or the open ocean these habitats are crucial to healthy populations. You can help protect our wildlife by simply making small changes in your life. Cutting out single use plastic, limiting your seafood intake, and using reef safe sunscreen to name a few. Visit our Be the Change section on our website for more information 💙 〰️〰️〰️ 📸: @gbrllozada #worldwildlifeday #ocean #wildlife #sealife #sharks

Where will your holiday balloon end up? Balloons are a common item we see floating in our oceans or washing up on beaches and they can be deadly to wildlife. Birds, turtles, and fish may mistake them for a food source or get tangled in the strings. Mylar balloons (the shiny metallic looking ones) are sold everywhere during holidays but did you know these types of balloons are not biodegradable and can take hundreds of years to decompose? If you happen to purchase one of these balloons, please dispose of them properly, recycle them if possible, or deflate them and reuse them another time 💙 〰️〰️〰️ #ocean #sustainability #valentinesday #beachclean #saltlife

Last week our team spent time visiting schools and gifting our new sawfish book to children on Andros. In total @annieguttridge and Sarontaa Bain presented to almost 700 children, all of which received a copy of the book. But that’s not all, next week we’ll visit additional schools with the aim of gifting every child on Andros a copy of the book by summer 2026. This incredible outreach effort would not be possible without the backing and support of @atlantisbahamas who generously donated and funded this project. In addition, we must thank @rpigraphic who kindly printed the books at no charge, allowing us to make a greater impact. Sawfish Bradley was written and designed by Saving the Blue President Annie Guttridge who created the book in loving memory of the late Bradley Mackey. Bradley was a local, well-known bone fishing guide who is deeply and dearly missed by all who knew him. We must also highlight Saving the Blue Creative Alison Ching who brought Annie’s vision to life with passion, skill, sensitivity and a drive for perfection. Thank you to all who encourage our work. We are truly making a difference in the name of ocean conservation and are thankful to those who support our vision, and missions.

One of these species is considered a benthic species and the other is considered pelagic. Do you know which one is which and what those words mean when it comes to sharks and other aquatic animals? 〰〰〰 📸: @annieguttridge #shark #sharks #ocean #triviatuesday #saltlife

Anyone that has spent time catching and tagging sharks will know there’s always apprehension until the shark is secured. We rarely lose sharks, however it can happen. Sometimes a shark pops a hook or crimp, and occasionally they bite through the fishing line and get off. Given this, the team always remain incredibly focused and somewhat anxious until they have the shark secured ready for tagging. This video shows the moment we all dread, the line goes limp with no movement and the slack line is reeled in as someone shouts ‘it got off’. As you can imagine, our hearts sunk, especially given we had a WHITE SHARK on the line… However, as you continue to watch the video you see the shark was in fact still on!! It seems the shark flipped and went into tonic immobility, then started to swim down and then back up towards the boat, and our team! This unbelievable moment is one we regularly relive. White sharks are known for their intelligence and incredible cognitive abilities and well, this potential avoidance to capture is something we have never seen or heard of before! Did she really swim down and then up to gain slack? But why? To confuse us? To bite the slack line? Was she simply problem solving in an attempt to escape? We did go on to catch and tag her, meet Dolores. She was and is the first and only white shark to be satellite tagged off the coast of Jupiter, Florida. In order to conserve and manage sharks, researchers use tags to track them in their natural habitat and study their movement patterns and behavior. This tagging allows researchers to better understand the species’ life history, social behavior, reproduction and much more, including how often the animals may interact with fisheries. These fields are all very important for advancing the conservation and management of sharks. Video: @annieguttridge #whiteshark #greatwhite #shark #sharkfishing #sharkresearch #savingtheblue

A little throwback to our first ever shark tagged! This large female nurse shark was tagged in July of 2018 and the team collectively named her Mia. We hope she’s doing well and continuing to explore the beautiful waters surrounding Andros 💙 〰️〰️〰️ 📸: @annieguttridge #shark #sharks #throwbacknothursday #ocean #thebahamas

Shark skin is made up of dermal denticles. These are like small teeth on their skin instead of scales. With many species it is difficult to see the individual denticles but nurse sharks are quite noticeable and beautiful. Their skin is like a mosaic of colors 😍 〰️〰️〰️ 📸: @gbrllozada #shark #sharks #sharkscience #marinebiology #ocean

This one’s a bit tricky! This shark was seen on the eastern coast of Florida and is often confused with blacktip sharks. Does anyone know the species? 🤨 〰〰〰 #shark #sharks #ocean #wildlife #saltlife #sealife
