Lil bit surprised by these multiple 'what can I do to fight fascism' posts with long lists of activities but don't even include 'find and join an antifascist political organization'

Governor Andy Beshear, in a Trump 30 state, gives advice to Democrats: Do not throw LGBTQ people under the bus, it will not work. His advice to dems: Lead on your values. This man ran on a fully inclusive campaign in 2023 and won. He received the same kind of ads Harris did.

BREAKING: H.R. 9495 has FAILED to pass a vote in the House, with 256 voting yes and 145 voting no. It has failed to clear a 2/3 majority required to pass under suspension vote.
TODAY: Congress is voting on a bill that would give Trump sweeping power to destroy any nonprofit that disagrees with him. Pro-Palestine groups would be especially vulnerable H.R. 9495 needs a 2/3 majority to pass the House, so it's up to Democrats whether it passes or not.

If people tell you gen AI is a tool rather than a replacement for human creativity, show them this new data from Harvard Business Review: - ChatGPT reduced writing jobs by 30% and coding jobs by 20% - AI image generators reduced image creation jobs by 17% - These numbers are not rebounding - The effect is bigger and faster than with other forms of automation It’s self-evident that generative AI competes with the work it’s trained on, and the people behind that work. But there is now a growing body of evidence to support this. hbr.org/2024/11/research-how…

Even if true Pause for a tiny second to consider what that means for our planet in the long run
The US currently has 2% inflation, 4% unemployment, and has seen years of sustained real income growth. Americans are consuming more than ever before in history, eating out more, and taking more vacations. Our information environment is completely broken.

While scientists were more productive, they reported lower job satisfaction, mostly because their skills were under-utilized and because their tasks were more repetitive after the AI.

And this is how tasks change when the AI is introduced, one of the coolest graphs of the whole paper: idea generation halves, judgement of materials doubles, experimentation slightly increases.

Importantly, the *more productive* scientists--those initially producing more new materials--are gaining more from the collaboration with the AI. See the shift in new materials discovery distribution (left) and new prototype introduction by decile of productivity (right).

82% of materials scientists report reduced job satisfaction after introduction of AI support tools, because now they spend their time evaluating AI generated suggestions 😭
I just read the paper in full; it is even more spectacular than I initially thought. A short thread about the results and their significance.

Hey tech workers. If you're asked to work on systems to support mass deportations, fuck those systems up as much as you can. Drag it out. Whistle blow. Leak. Shut it down.

actually kind of helpful that the tech billionaires have gone mask-off. liberal software engineers who have been working at companies like "ah well at least it's being run by democrats, probably not evil" look again!

….which shows how broken the surveillance biz model powering the current centralized tech industry is. Signal is the nervous system of secure comms globally. We are innovating while big tech is stagnating. Yet we’re fundraising donations while boring apps white labeling big tech cloud APIs are getting billion dollar valuations…
From Meredith Whittaker at #FTFutureodAI Summit this morning: "We haven't set up Signal as a not for profit company to be cute, in a normal company the board would pressuring us to monetise your data and erode privacy; I won't do that." @mer__edith @madhumita29 @FT @ftlive
