If you’re a Guardian or Observer reader, please share this. The need for a strong, free & independent press couldn’t be greater. Yet, here it is. The billionaire Scott Trust is preparing to push a core part of the Guardian over the cliff into the hands of speculators & profiteers
Observer owner Scott Trust has delayed making a final decision on the sale to Tortoise after meeting this afternoon, but said that "talks continue to progress and there are a few outstanding points".

My first comment piece in @guardian is on a topic very close to my heart; the threat that the #ClimateCrisis poses to my local community in South Wales. Here's a thread with a few extra thoughts from me 🧵

May not fit the narrative trying to be created here but best not rely on old signs - they struggle to keep up! 9 five metre floods pre 2000 10 in the 24 years since 8 in the last 5 years - almost the same as in preceding 200 years! 3 in the last 2 years, including yesterday
Interesting picture from the Wye in Hereford. 1795 was a bad year for climate change.

The heavy rainfall and floods in England and Wales have caused widespread disruption, and shown us categorically that we are not ready for what climate change is going to throw at us. Here’s a friend of mine describing his attempt to get from Manchester to Cardiiff:

After 4 days of relentless gales and rain, the flooding from Storm #Bert is huge. With global warming injecting more energy into the oceans, storms are becoming larger and more powerful. The Dept. for Infrastructure is fast becoming the Dept. for Repairs.

Current flooding map in #England. (Wales looks even worse.) The current U.K Govt has 5 missions. But it lacks a mission on climate adaptation. And without such a mission, all its other missions (including its electricity decarbonisation mission) risk being swept away. Literally.

This weekend has been an example of an atmospheric river setup - albeit a weak one. A long ribbon of moist air resulting in prolonged rainfall. They are expected to get more frequent and wetter due to climate change. Are we ready? Clearly not. doi.org/10.1126/sciadv.adq06…

It is not just Wales, but worldwide. From @CarbonBrief: “Mapped: How climate change affects extreme weather around the world” Analysis of 600 studies, covering almost 750 extreme weather events & trends showed 74% can be attributed to man-made warming. interactive.carbonbrief.org/…

Seems opportune time to share this thread I wrote just 3 weeks ago. This weekend’s heavy rainfall is just a taste of what’s coming. Atmospheric river events will become wetter and more frequent. We know it yet we move from flood to flood hoping things will improve. They won’t.
Inevitably there’s considerable interest in what impacts a Valencia type of rainfall event would have on the UK. A 🧵 metro.co.uk/2024/11/01/happe…

15°C in southern England tomorrow—just 4 weeks before Christmas. Most of England will be ~8°C above the seasonal norm. 🌍 The wild climate swings we’re seeing will only intensify as the planet continues to warm.
