ALT On June 28, 1776, William Moultrie defended Fort Sullivan from British General Henry Clinton during the Battle of Sullivan’s Island. The Battle of Sullivan’s Island was a patriot victory, and afterward, the fort was renamed to Fort Moultrie by the South Carolina General Assembly in honor of William Moultrie. The first fort was constructed of palmetto logs and sand. Years after the American Revolution, the fort went through periods of rebuilding. In 1885, the fort was again modernized with new concrete and steel batteries, and the old fort became a part of the Fort Moultrie Military Reservation. Today, Fort Moultrie has been restored to show the major periods in history from 1809 to 1947.

Thomas Sumter joined the provincial militia at the outbreak of the French and Indian War. In 1761, Sumter was selected to participate in a diplomatic mission to the Cherokee nation and escorted an Indian delegation to London the following year.
Thomas Sumter earned his nickname, the “Fighting Gamecock,” after he formed a guerrilla band of military men in the Revolution and used fierce, relentless, and aggressive fighting tactics against the British soldiers and their leader, Banastre Tarleton, in the Carolinas.
Sumter served in the General Assembly, the US House of Representatives, and the US Senate. He was the last surviving American general of the Revolution, dying in 1832 at the age of 97.
