Today we celebrate 251 years of the United States Army and the generations of soldiers who answered the call to serve.
In this clip, World War II veteran Vincent Speranza shares the story of joining the Army and his first introduction to boot camp in Georgia—a journey that would eventually take him into combat with the famed 101st Airborne Division during the Second World War.
From nervous recruits arriving at training camps to soldiers fighting across Europe, every Army story begins with a first step. For Vincent and millions of others, that step was a commitment to something greater than themselves.

Eighty-two years ago, Allied forces stormed the beaches of Normandy. Among them were the Bedford Boys — 44 men from a small Virginia town of just 3,200 people. Nineteen were killed within the first nine minutes, without ever firing a shot, giving Bedford the highest per capita D-Day loss in the nation.
They gave up their tomorrows for our today. Never Forget the Bedford Boys and all Americans who gave their lives to liberate the world from tyranny and secure the freedoms we cherish as Americans 🇺🇸

On June 6, 1944, Tom Rice parachuted into Normandy as a young soldier with the 101st Airborne Division, joining thousands of Allied paratroopers in one of history’s most pivotal military operations.
Seventy-five years later, on June 5, 2019, Rice returned to the skies above Normandy. At 97 years old, he made another jump, landing near the same drop zone where he entered occupied France as a 22-year-old paratrooper on D-Day.
His remarkable return was more than a tribute to those who served—it was a living connection to history and a powerful reminder of the courage, sacrifice, and determination of the Greatest Generation.
May we never forget the men who answered the call on D-Day and helped secure the freedoms we enjoy today.

ALT Bob Horner: 1957 - 2026
ALT Bob Horner built a career out of being first. He was the first overall pick in the 1978 draft after an illustrious collegiate career. He was the first Braves draftee to skip the minor leagues entirely and debut directly in the majors. And he was the first Atlanta player to ever hit four home runs in a single game when he did so against the Montreal Expos in 1986. The National League Rookie of the Year in 1978 and an NL All-Star in 1982, Horner teamed with Dale Murphy to form one of the most feared power duos in the game for nearly a decade. The Atlanta Braves extend sincere sympathies to his wife, Chris, two sons, Tyler and Trent, and his numerous friends and fans across the game.
