SCY’s Child and Youth Friendly Communities program dates back to the 1990s, when it got its start with a focus on play, built environment, and child-friendly housing strategies.
The present aims of the program are to support youth in becoming active participants in the development of their communities, and to ensure local governance decision making and city planning includes youth input.

The Walking School Bus Regional Coordinator plays a direct role in the day-to-day implementation of our Walking School Bus program across Metro Vancouver. This position works together with a team including the WSB Provincial Lead, other Regional Coordinators and SCY Staff
A Walking School Bus (WSB) is an organized group of children who walk to school together with the support of one or more adult leaders. Our program was developed by TransLink as part of their regional Youth Travel Strategy and has since grown to reach new communities in BC.
The YAC is a youth-driven committee providing young people across BC a platform to make their voices heard in matters that affect them, while advising the organization on local issues and strategic priorities.

After a successful pilot year in Metro Vancouver, SCY's Walking School Bus saw over 130 children cumulatively walk nearly fifteen-thousand kilometers, avoiding school traffic congestion and over 3 tons of greenhouse gas emissions!
