A 5 km walk around the fortified town of Willemstad at a strategic point between North Brabant and South Holland. Its defenses withstood the Spanish in the 16th century, the French in the 18th century, but not the Germans in 1940. They added bunkers and antitank walls. #mapmywalk

A 6 km walk around Groningen, fortified with stone walls before 1470, when they were replaced with earthworks to absorb canonballs. In 1594 the Dutch captured the city from the Spanish and added bastions. Today the only remaining gate is on display at the Amsterdam @rijksmuseum.

A 5 km walk exploring the fortified village of Bourtange. Founded in 1580 as a fortress to control the only route through the marshland, it lost its military function after 1850 when the marshes were dried, but since 1967 the defenses have been restored to create a living museum.

Once home to the country's second oldest university (after the one in Leiden), founded in 1585 by the States of Friesland, closed by Napoleon in 1811, today the city is best known for the world's oldest working planetarium, built between 1774 and 1781. See eisinga-planetarium.nl/

The town centre was packed with tourists on this sunny holiday. The 17th century moat around it offered some peace and quiet, nice views of the green ramparts and a relaxing swim.

Nature reserve De Esch in Rotterdam today. Last month city council @gemeenteraad010 approved a shortsighted plan by alderman @vincentkar to build a new highway here, but traffic experts and local residents organized in @KerngroepO @SOSDeEsch continue to call for a tunnel instead.

Surfing in downtown Rotterdam. After a decade of planning and a year of building, @RIF010 opened two months ago in the city's oldest harbour (first mentioned in 1334), creating artificial waves for surfers at all levels. Even this rainy Wednesday morning plenty of fans showed up.

The surfing season in Rotterdam will reopen in April. Despite rumours about financial trouble, @RIF010 is now busy with maintenance of the surfing area in the old harbour. They have temporarily pumped out the water, offering a rare look at its dry basin.

When I planted these butterfly bushes a year ago they were little saplings (about 10 cm). In a year they grew to over 2 meters wide and high. Today was their first pruning day. Quite a change. Let's see what happens this year. butterflybushes.com/blogs/in… #butterflybush #vlinderstruik
