ABSOLUTELY GOBSMACKED that the National Endowment for the Arts chose BLACKFISH CITY for their iconic Big Read program! Alongside some of my favorite books, like THEIR EYES WERE WATCHING GOD and THE HOUSE ON MANGO STREET! Link in bio, omg, brb, hyperventilating. @NEAarts

Listen. As a gay man who got bullied by jocks in the 90s, sports fandom has always felt menacing to me. But as a New Yorker: what joy, to walk the uptown streets last night! Love, fireworks, impromptu splits… I say it every day. Today I say it a little louder: I love New York.

Yes, humans are always the worst monsters, but also…pease give me monsters once in a while, you know? A creature here, an indescribable abomination there, something in the woods. Give me big teeth and things hiding in the sewers or abandoned subway tunnels. Monsters are awesome.

Today Outdoor Walking Tour $25 starting at the Museum of Reclaimed Urban Space. Learn the amazing history of the lower east side, how community members rebuilt the neighborhood after a community crisis, and it became a community and sustainable success story.

I miss the era when having enormous wealth was seen as profoundly embarrassing and potentially cause for damnation, to the extent that robber barons would attempt to rid themselves of their massive fortunes by building libraries, museums, concert halls, research universities.

I think about this every day. In the Netherlands, if a person dies alone, without any family or friends as mourners, a poet will be sent to write a poem and read it at the burial service. It's called the Lonely Funeral Project, and it's just humans being good humans.

“I put on my murder sweater,” the next chapter of JUPITER RUINS EVERYTHING, drops tomorrow… in which Deimos switches up his plans: from seducing one target to annihilating another. Subscribe for free, or go paid to vote in the poll on what happens next! sentencebender.substack.com/…

You have spoken! Voting is finished on the first paid-subscriber poll of what happens next: whether Deimos goes to his arch-nemesis’s birthday party (stepping up the action & confronting our principal foe) or to his old neighborhood (letting bro breathe a little bit).

Writers, what's the coolest weirdest thing you've learned about lately in research for a project?

In honor of the Artemis II mission that's launching to the moon today, here's "Mexicans on the Moon," the titular poem from my SF poetry collection. Much love.

FRIENDS I AM NERVOUS!! This is the first time that paid subscribers to my serialized novel JUPITER RUINS EVERYTHING get to vote on what happens next! It's not that I think they'll make the wrong decision. But giving up narrative control feels strange! Not entirely unpleasant?

No one ever tells you this, about activist meetings. They’re wonderful and they’re terrible. They’re infuriating and they’re exhilarating and funny and melodramatic and full of interesting people.

I’ve rarely seen that captured in fiction before, and that’s part of my mission in JUPITER RUINS EVERYTHING: to help folks see that organizing for social change is real, and possible, and fun. And miserable lol sentencebender.substack.com/…

AI isn’t “democratizing” art. It’s strip-mining the sum total of human creativity, to sell us back a rotted zombie re-animation of our own words & dreams & feelings....

Support a human creator today. Buy a zine, go to a library, read a story written with actual blood and sweat. (I’ve got some of that at JUPITER RUINS EVERYTHING, but there's billions of awesome alternatives 😅). sentencebender.substack.com/…

I spent 15 years as a community organizer. I know how movements die: not from external threats (though those are real), but from exhaustion. From the grant that's not renewed. The grandma carrying more than her share of the work having to take a step back because of her health...

It’s ridiculous (what with the wormholes & artificial gravity & such). And it’s real (rooted in my heard-earned lessons on what social change actually looks like) The core story is free. And will stay that way. Because the people who need it most shouldn't have to pay for it...
