Open-source AI makes transparency the default, so no single monolith can dictate access, research, or innovation. Say no to the black box. That’s how everyone wins.
We’re rolling out changes to make Fable 5’s safeguards for frontier LLM development visible. Starting this week, flagged requests will visibly fall back to Opus 4.8—the same as our safeguards for cyber and bio. You will see this every time it happens. On the API, any flagged requests will return a reason for their refusal (coming to server-side fallback in the next few days). We wanted to deploy Fable 5 to our users quickly and safely. Visible safeguards can be probed, so they have to be robust, which takes time to get right. Invisible safeguards can be targeted more narrowly, allowing us to ship quickly with very few false positives. We went with invisible safeguards for this reason—and that was the wrong tradeoff. You should have visibility into the safeguards we have in place, and why. We’re sorry for not getting the balance right. Making the safeguards visible makes them easier to work around, so keeping them robust to jailbreaks will unfortunately mean more false positives while we improve the classifiers. We're also tuning our bio and cyber classifiers to trigger less often on harmless requests. We know this is frustrating and we’ll do our best to keep this period as short as possible. If you think a request has been mistakenly flagged: run /feedback in Claude Code, click thumbs-down on the fallback in Claude.ai or Cowork, or file the safeguard appeal form for API requests. Your reports help us tune these classifiers and we appreciate your feedback. support.claude.com/en/articl…

What happens when an AI agent fails? On OpenClaw, it spins off a mission, analyses what went wrong, and proposes a fix. Maybe a new skill. Maybe a new tool. Maybe rewriting its own loop. @ilblackdragon on building the operating system for self-improving agents.

Apple’s collaboration with Google signals that even the biggest tech giants can't build AI alone. The future belongs to interconnected systems and shared capabilities — and that's exactly the dynamic open-source AI is built to take further.
Jun 8
SITUATION EXPLAINED: Apple's new foundation models were created through a deep collaboration with Google Gemini • New Siri is called "Siri AI" and includes a dedicated app and features like personal context, app actions, visual intelligence, and world knowledge • A new system orchestrator connects Apple Intelligence across all Apple platforms • Five core capabilities: personal context understanding, app actions, on-screen awareness, image understanding, broad world knowledge • Privacy: on-device processing Private Cloud Compute, data never stored or accessible to Apple or anyone else

The full conversation between @0xsachi and @ilblackdragon is here. An hour on why he was the first transformer author to leave Google, why open weights aren't enough, what user-owned AI actually looks like, and how your prompts might already be getting rewritten without you knowing.

The goal wasn’t to beat OpenAI. It was to catch up. What happened next says a lot about the power of open-source AI ↓
Open and closed AI may compete, but that competition also pushes innovation forward. @sewoong79, Director of Research at @SentientAGI, shares his perspective during the Open vs Closed AI panel at the Open AGI Summit in Brussels.

Why aren’t open weights enough and what would it take to build AI that users actually control? @ilblackdragon breaks it down in Episode 4 of @opencommonspod
Eight people wrote the paper that built modern AI. @ilblackdragon was the first to leave Google. The others founded labs like Character, Cohere, and Inceptive. Illia built @near_ai around a different idea: that AI should belong to the people using it, not the labs running it. In Episode 4 of @opencommonspod, we get into why open weights aren't enough, what user-owned AI actually looks like, and how your prompts might already be getting rewritten without you knowing. If AI enables unimaginable prosperity, then universal basic wealth being guarded by centralized forces is a direct threat to humanity. Builders shouldn’t have to rent intelligence from corporations that decide who gets access to frontier models and who doesn’t.
Sam Altman reveals why he no longer believes universal basic income is the answer to AI "I used to be really excited about universal basic income, where you just give everybody money. I still am kind of excited about that. But I think people really need agency" "If you just say AI is going to do everything and everybody gets a dividend, it's not going to feel good, and I don't think it would actually be good for people" "I don't just want a check every month. What I'd want is an ownership share in whatever the AI creates, so I feel like I'm participating in this thing that's going to compound and get more valuable over time" "So I sort of like universal basic wealth better than universal basic income"

When Elon Musk or Sam Altman buy millions of GPUs, @EMostaque says those aren't for running the models. They're for replacing workers in jobs you can do from the other side of a screen, then going into government and controlling it. If the AI you rely on is owned by an unelected multinational, what exactly do you do about it? Full episode: youtu.be/oopwD8yoYqQ?si=RfE-…

The recap from our conversation with @EMostaque is up on Substack. Three futures for AI, the Last Economy, sovereign AI, Ripley bots, why corporations were the first conscious AIs, and Emad's answer when @0xsachi asked what he most wants readers of his book to walk away with: "The meaning of life isn't work. It's community." Full article : open.substack.com/pub/openco…
