Still about elephants, one of my favourite verses from the Kumārasambhava is:
“Where [at Mount Himalaya] the odour emanated by the sap of the Sarala trees, rubbed by elephants to remove the itching of their cheeks, makes the peaks fragrant.” 1.9

What is my profile picture? It is an illustration from the Gajaśāstra (the science of elephants, or elephantology). It firstly tells a story of origin, that elephants used to be celestial beings created with wings and tusks, who were banished to earth.

A piece of elephant-adjacent vocabulary: in the Mbh, there is a Sanskrit term “abhipadma”, referring to loss of pigmentation elephants develop as they age and conceptualised as ‘lotus-coloured spots’. In other texts one may also encounter “padmakam” which means the same thing.

Recently attended a lecture on the Nabivamsha written by Syed Sultan. It is a Hindu-Islamic text, where Abrahamic prophets are identified with the avatars of Vishnu (for example Joseph is said to be Krishna), and prophet Muhammad becomes the final and perfect divine avatāra.
