Do you think there will be any accountability at all for the people currently presuming that we have room temp/pres superconductors and extrapolating preposterous predictions about how the world is about to change?

Can you guys imagine like if we all had to VPN inside the Great Firewall of China to be able to keep using TikTok?!

Do you guys remember when scientists taught spinach how to send email, and one of them sent an email to @skatie420 with the subject line, “hey im spinch”. I still think about that.

Waitaminute, did you just say Lawnmower Man???
Our mistake in tech was allowing lawnmower-managers to take over. It’s caused manager bloat, layers, and 1:1 overload. Let’s undo? 🧵

Like, I’m sure Matroska has a lot of things to recommend it that I just don’t realize, but the lack of decode timestamps, and the fact that time-bases are limited to base-10, are sort of bummer things. Are there MPEG patents on these things, or was this a design choice?

Fun things I’ve learned while wandering through the Unicode character repertoire part 1/N: The ℞ symbol is a ligature of Px, not Rx. The additional \ on R is redundant with the same stroke on the X. Doctors use x’s to abbreviate on charts: Hx=history, Dx=Diagnosis, &c.

And speaking of the horizontal ellipses (…), it’s a single character as far as Unicode is concerned, which is useful for input methods that automatically capitalize sentences and increase spacing after a full stop (.). And for cramming more and more characters into your tweets…

Are you in an industry where the approximation symbol (≈) is more common than the tilde (~)? What about prime (′) or tick (') instead of grave (`)? These symbols were on typewriters for overtyping accents above vowels and now we’re stuck with them forever‽

Speaking of full stops, the typists’ convention of adding two spaces after a full stop doesn’t carry over to computers and proportional fonts, because the ideal space between sentences will vary by context, but 1½ the inter-word space is common, which is an ‘en space’ ( ).

Buildings where you have to use a keyfob in the elevator to get to any floor besides 1, but that also have stairs, why?

Have you ever received a GDPR warning from a file:// URL? I guess there's no reason this shouldn't happen, it's just one of those "hrmm" things.

My new favorite graphics artifact that I now see everywhere: clearing the out-of-bounds areas of a YCbCr buffer to (0, 0, 0) instead of (0, 128, 128), yielding green instead of black. The bleeding here can also be avoided by clamping of course.

C opinion of zero import: "this" should be a reference, not a pointer. I've seen code in a very popular game middleware that would break due to packing object IDs into pointers, casting them, and then calling methods on them that perform table lookups to get the actual "this."

Similarly, I wonder what kinds of Fourier-like filtering could be done directly to JPEG data before reconstruction.
