As #WomensHistoryMonth wraps up, we’re taking a look back at BCDC’s origins, starting with the three visionary women whose advocacy shaped our mission.
In 1961, Kay Kerr, Sylvia McLaughlin, and Esther Gulick founded Save The Bay to fight unchecked development shrinking SF Bay by 4 square miles per year.
Their grassroots leadership led to the McAteer-Petris Act (1965) and the creation of BCDC—the first coastal zone management agency in the U.S. #SaveTheBay#BCDC
💡 Wetlands need sediment and soil to survive rising seas — so let’s reuse them! BCDC’s SWAP Action Plan helps restore wetlands by repurposing dredged sediment & excess construction soil instead of wasting it. 🌍
